DJI has added a third camera to its O4 Air Unit lineup, and the headline number is the field of view. The new DJI O4 Wide Air Unit swaps the standard model’s 117.6-degree lens for a 159-degree ultra-wide one, giving FPV builders the immersive, edge-to-edge perspective they have been buying aftermarket lenses to get. The sensor, the recording specs, and the transmission system carry over from the standard unit unchanged. Only the glass is new.
That is the part of the story the wire coverage led with. Here is the part it left out. DJI’s own support documentation states the O4 Wide Air Unit is not sold in the United States or Puerto Rico, and that after-sales service is unavailable in those regions. For a product aimed squarely at hobbyists building 2-inch micro quads, the most important spec for an American reader is the one nobody put in the headline: you cannot walk into the DJI Store and add this to your cart. In my years covering DJI launches, I have watched the gap between “announced” and “available in the U.S.” widen with almost every release since last December. This is the sharpest version of it yet for the FPV crowd.
The Wide sits between the standard O4 and the Pro
The O4 Wide Air Unit fills the middle slot in a three-model family. It keeps the same 1/2-inch image sensor as the standard O4 Air Unit, records 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, and runs DJI’s O4 video transmission system. Live view is 1080p at up to 100fps using H.265 encoding, with a maximum published range of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and latency as low as 20 milliseconds in Racing Mode.
The difference is weight and reach. The standard O4 Air Unit, which debuted in January 2025, weighs 8.2 grams with its camera and remains the lightest option for builders counting every gram. The Wide tips the scales at roughly 13 grams with the camera, putting it on slightly larger micro builds. At the top sits the O4 Air Unit Pro, with a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K/120fps recording, a dual-antenna design, and a 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) transmission ceiling. The Wide is the model for pilots who want the broadest possible view without paying the weight penalty of the Pro.
According to DJI’s specifications, the 159-degree figure applies when recording in a 4:3 aspect ratio with the camera set to Wide and electronic image stabilization turned off. That last condition matters. The widest view and in-camera stabilization are mutually exclusive on this unit, a tradeoff worth knowing before you mount it.
DJI built what FLYWOO already proved pilots wanted
The narrow field of view was the single most common complaint about the original O4 Air Unit, and the aftermarket answered it before DJI did. FPV maker FLYWOO, working with Runcam, sold a modified wide-angle O4 unit that gave pilots the broader perspective months ago. FPV reviewer Oscar Liang, who tested that FLYWOO lens, wrote at the time that the wide view was what the O4 should have shipped with from the start. Liang writes that DJI appears to be using a solution close to what FLYWOO built, likely through some collaboration between the two companies, though he stops short of calling that confirmed. What DJI’s own manufacturing line should bring, in his view, is tighter quality control.
One thing DJI did not change is the gyro. The O4 Wide carries the same ICM-40609-D gyro as the standard unit, the chip known among builders for being more sensitive to vibration and more likely to produce jello in stabilized footage on frames without strong vibration damping. Liang reports that FLYWOO will offer a custom O4 Wide with the older, more reliable MP66 gyro swapped in by its own technicians, though those chips are discontinued and stock is limited. If you care about clean stabilized video, that swap is the detail to track, and it is one more thing American buyers will not get through a normal retail channel.
The U.S. block is a direct consequence of the Covered List
The reason this product is missing from American shelves is not a DJI marketing choice. It is the FCC. On December 22, 2025, the agency added DJI and all foreign-made drones to its Covered List, blocking new equipment authorizations and effectively preventing any new DJI radio device from being imported, marketed, or sold in the United States. The action does not ground existing hardware, and anything authorized before that date stays legal to buy and fly. But a brand-new transmission unit announced in mid-2026 has no path to FCC authorization while the designation holds.
This is the pattern DJI quantified in its Ninth Circuit filing: five drone models and nine non-drone products already blocked, with 25 more 2026 launches stuck in limbo and a projected $1.56 billion in lost U.S. revenue this year. The O4 Wide Air Unit is exactly the kind of product that number represents, a small-dollar accessory that would have sold quietly to thousands of American builders and now simply will not appear here. DJI is challenging the designation through a Ninth Circuit petition (Case 26-1029) arguing the government never produced evidence to justify the listing, alongside a reconsideration petition at the FCC that drew a Department of Defense opposition citing classified intelligence.
The exemption process the FCC built has so far cleared eleven manufacturers, all of them non-Chinese, none of them DJI. Even the agency’s narrow toy-drone carve-out is written so tightly that a DJI Neo would not qualify. There is no realistic mechanism in the current framework for a Chinese-made FPV transmission unit to get through.
The clearest evidence of the block sits on DJI’s own site. The U.S. support page for the O4 Air Unit series lists full certified specifications, including FCC-rated transmission range, for the standard O4 Air Unit and the O4 Air Unit Pro. The O4 Wide Air Unit does not appear in that spec table at all. DJI is not hiding the product. It simply has not built out the U.S.-facing listing for it, because there is no U.S. listing to build.

This is what the DJI ban actually looks like at the workbench, and it is worth being precise about who it hurts. The O4 Wide Air Unit is a 13-gram camera module for hobbyist FPV drones. It is not a surveillance platform, not a critical-infrastructure tool, not a defense system. It is the part a teenager solders onto a 2-inch quad to get better footage of their backyard. And it is banned from the American market not because anyone demonstrated it poses a threat, but because it shares a logo with a company the FCC swept onto the Covered List the day before a deadline, without conducting the audit Congress gave it a full year to perform.
American builders will get this unit anyway. They will buy it gray-market from overseas sellers, pay more, and have no warranty or after-sales support when something fails, because DJI’s own documentation confirms that service is gone too. The ban does not stop the hardware from reaching U.S. pilots. It just strips away the price, the support, and the consumer protection that came with buying it legitimately. That is the opposite of what a security policy is supposed to accomplish. It makes the American FPV pilot worse off while doing nothing to DJI’s ability to sell this product to the rest of the world.
The piece I will be watching is the Ninth Circuit. DJI’s case 26-1029 is pending now, and if the court forces the government to produce the evidence it has never had to show, the entire architecture blocking products like this one changes shape. Until then, every DJI launch is going to come with the same asterisk for American readers: here is a great piece of gear, and no, you can’t buy it. The O4 Wide is just the latest name on that list.
