A Ukrainian studio has trained more than 7,000 military drone operators on a simulator built to behave almost exactly like a real FPV strike drone, and it hands the software to the armed forces for free.
The Ukrainian Fight Drone Simulator, or UFDS, comes from Simtech Solutions, a roughly 30-person team whose founders pulled their scenarios straight off the front line. Co-founder Vladyslav Plaksin sums up the standard in one line. “I take a real drone and just burn it. It’s things like this that form the boundary between a game and a simulation.”
The simulator copies real drones with a black-box method
UFDS reproduces real drone behavior at about 95% accuracy by working more like an engineering rig than a game, taking a manufacturer’s original 3D model one to one, then recording a real aircraft’s performance like an airliner’s black box and tuning the virtual version until it matches. The result is a drone that flies in software the way it flies in your hand.
The physics run deeper than a normal flight game bothers with. UFDS tracks the thrust of each motor, ESC temperature, VTX temperature, RPM, speed, and battery status in real time, with one person on the team dedicated only to modeling battery drain per drone type. Push the throttle to 100% and the battery overheats, exactly as it would on a real quad, a limit most simulators never enforce.
The realism sits on the logic of a real flight controller, running the same calculations a physical drone runs. When an interceptor drone shifts into its combat posture and a structural beam starts acting like a wing, the sim moves the center of aerodynamic pressure the way the air actually would. Pilots use it to practice not stalling a drone in a dive, the emergency that turns a real airframe into scrap.
Finding the target is the hard part, so the sim hides it
Plaksin has flown combat missions himself, so he built the environment around the part beginners never expect, the search, because in most simulators a target sits in the open while on the real front everything is camouflaged and finding it on a Mavic can take an hour or more. UFDS forces that same frustration on purpose.
The maps are dense and the targets are hidden, so trainees at Ukrainian Armed Forces centers learn early that the shooting is the easy part. A new pilot who does not understand what happens at 124 mph (200 km/h) will simply crash, so the sim makes them earn the speed before they ever touch a real drone.
The savings are blunt arithmetic. Plaksin figures that without simulator practice, one crew in three or five wrecks a drone, so training the 500 crews Ukraine needs to knock down incoming Shahed drones would cost about 100 lost aircraft. At roughly $3,000 each, that is $300,000 the state does not burn in training crashes, which is how maximum physical realism pays for itself.
The team learned to fly by burning real drones
As Dev.ua reported, the three founders came at the drone problem from different corners of tech and war, and getting a room of coders to actually feel what a strike pilot feels turned out to be one of the hardest parts of building the thing. Plaksin financed it and brought combat time. Yuriy came from years of building 3D models and VR prototypes at large tech firms. The third partner arrived from a AAA game studio with the tactical and development depth.
Plaksin also credits early talks with Sergey Grigorovich, the force behind the STALKER games, for a belief that people learn fastest through play. That conviction ran into a wall inside his own studio. He had to order his developers to fly two hours in the simulator and then train with real instructors, because a coder who feels no thrill in the flying will not build it well, and even Yuriy struggled with it at first.
Then there is Plaksin’s way of settling an argument about physics. When a developer insists a mechanic is right and Plaksin knows it is wrong, he does not debate it. He takes a real drone, shows the room, and burns it. “It’s a waste of $50 on a motor or $100 on an ESC,” he says, but that is the line between a game and a simulation.
Steam sales and Lucky Strike drones keep it funded
Simtech split the project in two, a military build that stays free to the Ukrainian army until the war ends and a civilian Steam version that strips the sensitive content out and sells to anyone who wants to learn to fly. The military build is packed with real frontline maps and target-search logic, and locked behind a cryptographic system the team says has never been cracked inside Russia.
That civilian build is also a business. It has sold around 10,000 copies and cleared more than $300,000 in revenue, though Plaksin is blunt that after Steam’s cut, “God forbid that at least half of this revenue reaches us.” He calls the sales twice as bad as his own high bar, while peers building similar simulators told him the numbers are actually very good.
The money comes from several directions. Simtech integrates manufacturer drones roughly at cost and earns some compensation from NATO and partner training schools. It also runs a separate FPV drone line called Lucky Strike that is now heavily used on the front, so the studio builds the real aircraft its software models.
Plaksin frames the Steam version as a social elevator into the operator trade, where a recruit who shows up with 300 hours of flight time saves the state real money on day one. After a June multiplayer update that lets crews train together, the team plans to add ground robotic vehicles and water drones, which have gone from exotic to routine on the battlefield. As Yuriy puts it, that is not a wish list, it is a matter of time.

And this is the clearest picture yet of how Ukraine keeps out-cycling a bigger enemy. It is not one wonder weapon. It is the boring infrastructure of turning a civilian into a competent FPV operator quickly and cheaply, by the thousand, and letting Steam gamers help fund the soldiers flying the real thing.
Anybody who flies FPV already knows the sim is not optional. You crash a hundred times in software before you ever arm a real quad, because that is the only way to build the reflexes without paying for them in carbon fiber. Ukraine took that hobbyist truth, wrapped it in warhead weight and hidden targets, and turned it into a pipeline feeding 100,000 strikes.
The detail that sticks with me is Plaksin burning a $50 motor to win an argument. That is the gap between people who build from a spec sheet and people who build from the front. Whether Western militaries copy this tight, operator-built training loop is an open question, and it is the one worth watching, because the side that trains faster keeps the edge.
