South West London Pathology has turned drone delivery into daily healthcare infrastructure. Patient samples collected at Nelson Health Centre in Raynes Park now fly to the lab at St George’s Hospital in Tooting on Wing aircraft operated with Apian, cutting a road trip of about 20 minutes to a flight of just over three minutes for a network that serves up to 1.8 million people.

Three Minutes By Air Beats Twenty By Van
The route links Nelson Health Centre, which serves roughly 27,000 patients, with St George’s pathology lab, part of a service that processes around 51 million samples a year. South West London Pathology says more than 2,000 patients have already moved through the service since it began in February 2026.
That time gain is not cosmetic. For urgent bloodwork, every minute cut from transport can pull results closer to the clinical decision that depends on them. The drone does not eliminate the lab. It strips out the worst part of the chain: waiting in London traffic with temperature-sensitive material in the back of a courier vehicle.
Wing’s aircraft deliver the payload by hovering and lowering it on a tether instead of landing. That matters in dense urban healthcare settings where apron space is limited and rooftop or car-park operations have to fit around people, vehicles, and buildings that were never designed for an airside workflow.
From Emergency Trials To Daily Plumbing
The UK has seen medical drone demonstrations before, but most were framed as pilots or emergency logistics. The shift here is that this route is already being treated as routine service.

What looked like a narrow proof-of-concept then has now expanded into a broader pathology network, with St Helier, Croydon, and Kingston named as the next hospitals on the map.

Apian’s role matters too. The company was founded by NHS doctors and has spent the last few years turning one-off hospital flights into repeatable logistics routes. Wing brings the aircraft, operational discipline, and delivery system that it has already proven in large-scale commercial work elsewhere.
The operators say the route can be up to 85 percent faster than ground logistics, up to 23 percent cheaper than urgent courier service, and responsible for 98 percent less CO2 per delivery than a van. Those are company figures, but even without the marketing edge, the basic economics are easy to understand: pathology samples are small, light, time-sensitive cargo, exactly the kind of payload a small autonomous aircraft handles well.
Europe Keeps Moving Faster Than The U.S.
This is another reminder that Europe is still outpacing the United States in routine BVLOS medical logistics. EASA’s approval structure and the CAA’s willingness to extend regulated trials into working networks have created a clearer path from pilot to service than the U.S. still has.
That regulatory head start is now visible from ground level. A public health system as large and tradition-bound as the NHS does not adopt drone transport casually. Once a bureaucracy that size decides aircraft belong in the logistics stack, the argument over whether the concept works is effectively over.

A vial reaches the lab about 17 minutes sooner, and if the network expands the way the NHS says it will, that quiet savings compounds every single workday across a service area of 1.8 million people.
The real tell is the route map. Raynes Park to St George’s is not being sold as a moonshot. It is being operated as a habit, and habits are what change healthcare systems.
