DJI launched the DJI Mic Mini 2S globally on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 12:00 GMT, putting 32-bit float internal recording into a 12-gram (0.42 oz) clip-on transmitter for the first time. The kit with two transmitters, a receiver and a charging case sells for €189 in Europe and £169 in the UK. A single-transmitter mobile bundle starts at €99 or £79. Canadian buyers pay CAD $265 and CAD $149 for the same two configurations.

The August 4 announcement runs 700 words and never says the word “America.” It carries no pricing at all. DJI built regional product pages for Canada, the UK, Germany, France and Spain. It did not build one for the United States, and the mic does not appear in the US storefront.

That absence is the news. The Mic Mini 2S is a microphone. It does not fly, it does not carry a camera, and it weighs less than three US quarters. It is also, by DJI’s own accounting in federal court, one of 25 products the company says it cannot bring to the American market this year.

Internal Recording Closes The Gap That Defined The Mini Line

Each Mic Mini 2S transmitter carries roughly 14.5 GB of onboard storage and records independently of the receiver, holding up to 28 hours of audio in the default 24-bit mode. The transmitter also supports 32-bit float capture, which preserves a dynamic range wide enough that clipped peaks and buried whispers can both be recovered in post.

This is the feature that separated the budget Mini tier from the flagship DJI Mic 3, and it is the one complaint that followed the Mini line from launch. When the wireless link drops behind concrete or steel, the transmitter now keeps a clean local file anyway. DJI describes the result in its August 4 press release as “a more secure approach to audio capture.”

I wrote in June, when DJI confirmed the July 2 China launch date, that I shoot with the Mic 3 and its internal recording is a safety net I no longer want to work without. Getting it in a 12-gram body at a third of the price is the most consequential thing DJI has done in the audio category this year.

Four Transmitters Bring Roundtable Work Into The Mini Tier

One receiver now pairs with up to four transmitters simultaneously, double the Mic Mini 2’s ceiling. The receiver carries four status lights instead of two. That puts panel discussions, podcasts and multi-person interviews inside the reach of a system that previously topped out at a two-person setup.

Cross-generation compatibility is the underrated part. DJI states the 2S works with previous-generation Mic Mini and Mic Mini 2 transmitters as well as the DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver, so anyone who bought into the line in April can expand rather than replace.

Two levels of AI noise canceling handle indoor fan and air conditioning hum at the Basic setting and aggressive outdoor noise at Strong. Clipping Control drops gain on sudden spikes. Loudness Balance holds output steady across interviews and live streams. Three voice tone presets, Regular, Bright and Rich, are selectable in the app.

Transmitters connect directly to Osmo Pocket 4P, Osmo Pocket 4, Osmo 360, Osmo Nano and Osmo Action 6 over OsmoAudio at 48 kHz 24-bit, with no receiver in the chain. The detachable magnetic front covers carry over from the Mic Mini 2, including a Time Series set designed with illustrator Victo Ngai, sold separately at £35 or €39.

The Mic Mini 2S Buys Internal Recording With Battery Life

DJI’s own comparison page shows the trade nobody put in the press release. The Mic Mini 2S runs its charging case to 40 hours. The Mic Mini 2 runs to 48. Transmitter time drops from 11.5 hours to 11, receiver time from 10.5 to 10. Storage costs power.

Two numbers in that table deserve more attention than the launch coverage gave them. The Mic Mini 2S transmitter weighs 12 grams. The Mic 3 transmitter weighs 12.5 grams. Half a gram now separates DJI’s budget tier from its flagship, which means the physical argument for the Mini line has quietly evaporated. What remains is a price and feature argument.

The 2S is also the only mic of the three running AI noise canceling. DJI’s chart lists the Mic 3 and the Mic Mini 2 with two-level active noise canceling, the older implementation. A €99 product shipped the newer processing before the flagship did.

Against the Mic 3, the 2S still gives ground in three places. Storage is 14.5 GB versus 27.9 GB. Recording is single-file rather than dual-file, so there is no simultaneous safety track at a second gain setting. And the Mic 3 pairs with eight receivers to the 2S’s one, which matters on any set running multiple cameras. Timecode remains Mic 3 territory. For a solo creator or a two-person crew, none of those gaps justifies the price step. For anyone syncing multiple cameras, all of them do.

The US Absence Is A Regulatory Outcome, Not A Marketing Choice

DroneXL covered this product three times before today: the April 28 tease posted by DJI Japan on the same day the Mic Mini 2 went on sale globally, the June confirmation of the July 2 date, and Rafael Suárez’s coverage of the China-first launch. The US question stayed open through all three. August 4 closed it.

The Federal Communications Commission added all foreign-made drones and drone components to its Covered List on December 22, 2025, blocking new equipment authorizations. DJI’s April 15 brief in the Ninth Circuit put a number on the damage: five drone models and nine non-drone products already blocked, 25 more 2026 launches in limbo and roughly $1.56 billion in lost US revenue this calendar year.

The pattern repeats across DJI’s non-flying catalog. The O4 Wide Air Unit skipped the US entirely in June. The Osmo Pocket 4 skipped it in April. The Mic Mini 2S transmitter appeared in the FCC database on January 31, 2026, and the filing was pulled weeks later. I flagged that disappearance in April as the first concrete signal the US path was already gone. It was.

The exemption machinery keeps running for everyone else. The FCC has cleared eleven manufacturers through Department of War conditional approvals, including an indoor classroom trainer with a 2.5-meter (8 ft) flight ceiling. DJI and Autel appear nowhere on that list. The agency also extended its firmware waiver to January 2029 for hardware authorized before the cutoff, conceding that cutting off patches would harm consumers more than the ban helps them, while leaving new products blocked.

DroneXL’s Take

A €99 microphone is now collateral damage in a national security framework built for aircraft.

Read that again. The Covered List exists because Congress and the FCC determined that foreign-made drones could enable persistent surveillance and data exfiltration over US territory. Whatever you think of that determination, the Mic Mini 2S has no camera, no flight capability, no GPS, and no reason to be anywhere near it. It clips to a shirt and records a voice. The framework swept it up anyway, and nobody at the Commission has explained why a lavalier mic poses the risk the December 2025 order describes.

Look at what DJI actually did on August 4. It built product pages in Canada, the UK, Germany, France and Spain. Same product, same launch hour, same press release. The US is the one market where DJI didn’t bother building the page, because there is no sale to route it to. That is not a company snubbing American customers. That is a company acknowledging a wall.

The people paying for this are not executives in Shenzhen. They are American solo creators, two-person video shops and small production crews who now watch Canadian colleagues buy a CAD $149 tool they cannot get through official channels. DJI loses a sale. The US creator loses the capability. That asymmetry is the whole problem with the ban in miniature, and a 12-gram microphone illustrates it better than any drone ever could.

The strangest part is that the FCC has already admitted the framework overreaches when it costs consumers too much. That is exactly what the firmware waiver extension to 2029 concedes. The agency decided bricking existing hardware was worse than the security risk it claimed to be mitigating. Fine. Apply the same reasoning to a microphone and the answer writes itself.

Two proceedings decide whether any of this changes. The reconsideration record in ET Docket 26-22 closed on May 11, and the Commission faces no deadline to rule on it. DJI’s Ninth Circuit case, docketed as Case 26-1029, is still fighting the FCC’s motion to dismiss on the theory that DJI cannot sue until the agency acts. DJI’s own brief cites the China Unicom petition, which sat at the Commission from October 2022 to May 2025. If that is the pace, American creators will be reading launch coverage for the Mic Mini 3S before anyone rules on the 2S.

I have covered every release in this line since the original Mic Mini arrived in November 2024. This is the third consecutive Mini-tier launch Americans watch from the sidelines. At some point the pattern stops being a regulatory hiccup and starts being the policy working as designed. We are past that point.
