DJI has released firmware v01.00.0800 for the DJI Avata 360, and the release notes, dated October 20, 2026, list four additions: Waypoint Flight, zoom inside FocusTrack, support for the DJI RC Pro 2, and automatic display orientation switching in Vision Assist. It is the first feature release for the drone since June 23, and the first time any drone in the Avata line has been given waypoints.

Shawn from Air Photography flew the new build the next day and walked through the waypoint and RC Pro 2 workflow for DroneXL. This piece covers what DJI’s own release notes add to that: the version numbers, the controller dependency, and what else in the kit moves.

The aircraft update alone does not get an RC Pro 2 owner flying. DJI’s notes list RC Pro 2 firmware V01.00.0900 next to the aircraft build. The controller went on sale in May 2025, almost a year before the Avata 360 launched.

Nine version numbers change across the Avata 360 kit

The October 20 notes pair aircraft v01.00.0800 with DJI RC 2 v10.00.0900, RC Pro 2 V01.00.0900, Goggles N3 v01.00.1300, Goggles 3 v01.00.1600, RC-N2 and RC-N3 v01.00.0300, DJI Fly v1.21.16 and DJI Studio v1.2.11. The RC Motion 3 and FPV Remote Controller 3 keep their launch builds.

Against the September 1 notes, the Goggles N3 skip from v01.00.1100 straight to v01.00.1300, and the Goggles 3 move from v01.00.1500 to v01.00.1600. The September build and July’s v01.00.0500, which ended the black-screen video loss in the goggles, each carried a single line in DJI’s release notes: “Fixed some known issues.” That line closes this list too.

The RC Pro 2 launched alongside the Mavic 4 Pro in May 2025, and Russ reviewed it as a controller built for DJI’s camera drones. DJI’s Avata 360 notes list the RC Pro 2 for the first time with this release, so an owner who updates the drone and not the controller has changed nothing about how they fly.

DJI repeats its standing warning that the update can reset RTH Altitude and Maximum Flight Distance. Write both down before you tap update.

Waypoint Flight reaches the Avata line for the first time

Neither the original Avata nor the Avata 2 ever received Waypoint Flight. DJI’s release notes for both, running through October 20 and July 30, 2026, list no waypoint mode in any build. The Avata 360 gets it with v01.00.0800, planned in the DJI Fly map view.

In Shawn’s test, a five-waypoint mission around a point of interest showed a calculated time of one minute and 50 seconds, the active waypoint and the total distance, and the drone held its camera on the point of interest as it flew the loop. He had the mission set to return home at the end and canceled the RTH at waypoint five to keep flying. The mission builder is the one he covered in his DJI Mini 5 Pro waypoint tutorial.

Heading matters less on a 360 camera than on a flat one, because the final angle can be chosen in the edit. It matters again the moment you use the auto-export tools, which export the view on the screen.

The other two additions are smaller. Zoom in FocusTrack lets you punch in on a tracked subject, and DJI’s notes give no magnification figure. Vision Assist now switches its view to match the stick: forward shows the front, back shows the rear, sideways shows that side, and up and down show above and below the aircraft. Shawn walked through the same automatic switching on the Mini 5 Pro in February.

DroneXL’s Take

In April the Avata 360 lost a back-to-back FPV flight test to the Avata 2. Six months later DJI hands it waypoints, a feature the Avata 2 never got in two and a half years of firmware. I take that to mean DJI has settled which drone is the FPV machine and which is the 360 camera that flies itself, and the firmware roadmap now says so in writing. DJI made the right call there, because the people buying an 8K 360 drone want repeatable paths more than they want acro. For an owner, the order is controller first, then aircraft, then a look at the RTH altitude, and the first waypoint mission belongs somewhere you can see the drone the whole way around.
