Funding secured to deliver test kits for PPE and COVID-19 by drone

A group working to set up a Drone Emergency Medical Airbridge between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the United Kingdom to support the current medical supply chain of the National Health Service ( NHS) has received a share of £33 million ($43.5 million USD) in funding from the UK government to use drones to address major global challenges. As part of this project, drones will be used to deliver test kits for PPE and COVID-19.

In the United Kingdom, the Thames Valley to the west of London will be the site of what is expected to be the world’s first commercial ‘super-highway’ drone corridor in open and unrestricted airspace according to plans submitted to the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority. Operated and managed by Altitude Angel, the site will be available to support fully automated drone flights beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) from any drone company which completes a series of basic technical integrations which, crucially, don’t require specialist hardware on-board the drone.
