A drone operator flying a legal, permitted job near an airport, a stadium, or a protected federal site can lose GPS without ever being the intended target. Counter-drone jamming does not know the difference between an authorized inspection flight and the threat it was deployed against, and the systems built to stop illegal drones routinely reach far past their intended range.

The physics makes collateral interference unavoidable, not accidental

GPS jamming works by flooding a frequency band with noise, not by targeting a single receiver, so any aircraft sharing that band within range loses signal along with the intended target, regardless of whether it is friend or threat.

European aviation authorities studying counter-drone systems found that even the back lobe, the weakest and least-aimed part of a jammer’s signal, can degrade aviation GPS receivers 50 nautical miles away or more. Their stated conclusion was direct: avoiding impact on nearby airports, even from the back lobe, is not realistically possible with current equipment. That is not a design flaw in one product. It is a property of jamming a shared, unencrypted signal that every civilian GPS receiver in range depends on equally.

When France ran counter-drone protection for the Paris Olympics, its prime minister described the policy in four words: if in doubt, they always jam. That is not a rare exception made under pressure. It is the stated default posture at events where the cost of a false negative, a real drone getting through, is judged to outweigh the cost of degrading GPS for everyone nearby.

The same logic applies at any protected US site during a major event: stadiums during championship games, airports during testing windows, prisons dealing with contraband drops, and government facilities. A legal operator with a valid Part 107 certificate and a legitimate reason to fly nearby is not exempt from the interference just because their flight is authorized.

US military GPS testing produces some of the largest documented footprints

Scheduled military GPS interference testing publishes its effect radius in advance, and the numbers are larger than most civilian pilots assume. Public test advisories have listed effect radii in the range of 150 to over 200 nautical miles at low altitude, and closer to 300 nautical miles at high cruising altitude, centered on a single test site. A radius that size can cover several states’ worth of low-altitude airspace from one location.

The gap between what these tests announce and what a drone operator actually checks is where the risk lives. Check before you fly, and know that a clean check is not a guarantee

Before any flight near a major airport, military installation, prison, stadium, or large scheduled public event, check the FAA’s published GPS testing NOTAMs for your operating area and time window. These are public, they cover a defined radius and duration, and reading them takes a few minutes against a flight that could otherwise be flown blind into a known interference zone.

A clean NOTAM check is not the same as a guarantee, though. Counter-drone deployments around protected sites are not always scheduled or publicly announced, particularly around prisons and during unplanned security responses. If GPS degrades unexpectedly near one of these locations with no NOTAM in effect, treat it the same as any other jamming event: maintain visual line of sight, do not rely on return-to-home, and land as soon as it is safe.
