The Skydio X10 is the drone carrying the biggest bet in American drone manufacturing. Launched at Ascend in September 2023, where we flew it hands-on, it became the platform behind Skydio’s push into public safety and defense, and by 2026 the anchor of the largest single-vendor small-drone order in US Army history.
What is the Skydio X10?
The X10 is Skydio’s flagship enterprise quadcopter. Skydio’s published specifications rate it at 40 minutes of maximum flight time and 35 minutes of hover, both measured under ideal lab conditions, with a top speed of 45 mph (20 m/s) that drops to 36 mph (16 m/s) with standard obstacle avoidance running. It weighs 4.65 lbs (2.11 kg) with batteries against a 5.49 lb (2.49 kg) maximum takeoff weight, folds to 13.8 x 6.5 x 4.7 inches without the battery, and starts up in under 40 seconds.
Environmentals are where the enterprise positioning shows. The X10 carries an IP55 ingress rating, handles gusts to 28.6 mph (12.8 m/s), operates from -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C), and reaches a 15,000-foot density altitude service ceiling. Onboard it runs an NVIDIA Jetson Orin alongside a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, feeding six navigation cameras in a trinocular arrangement top and bottom. Each is a 32MP sensor with a 200-degree field of view, giving true 360-degree obstacle coverage out to 65 feet (20 meters).
The X10 takes four attachment bays, one each on the top, bottom, left, and right, with Skydio’s own catalog covering a parachute, a dropper, a spotlight, a speaker, and NightSense visible-light and infrared modules. Radio is where buyers choose: Connect SL reaches 12 km (7.5 miles) line of sight, and the Connect 5G option trades that ceiling for unlimited range wherever cellular coverage exists. Skydio also publishes the degradation tiers most spec sheets leave out, putting real-world Connect SL range at 6 to 12 km rural, 2 to 6 km suburban, and 1 to 2 km in urban or high-interference conditions. The controller is a 6.6-inch AMOLED unit at 1,750 nits peak brightness, IP54-rated, running about five hours per charge.
Power comes from a swappable pack that Skydio has revised once. The original battery is 8419 mAh at 18.55 V for 156.17 Wh and 707.5 grams; the second revision moves to 8800 mAh at 17.5 V for 154 Wh and trims weight to 685 grams. On the 230W dual charger, either takes about an hour from empty, or 35 minutes to go from 20 to 90 percent.
The VT300-Z and VT300-L payloads
Both sensor packages share a narrow camera and a radiometric thermal camera, then diverge on the third lens. The narrow camera is a 1/1.7-inch 64MP sensor at 46mm equivalent, f/1.8, with a 50-degree field of view. The thermal is a Teledyne FLIR Boson+ uncooled microbolometer at 640 x 512, 60mm equivalent, f/1.0, rated under 30 mK sensitivity, which Skydio says made the X10D the first small drone to integrate that sensor. It reads temperature from -40°C to 150°C, or up to 350°C in low-gain mode, to an accuracy of 5°C or 5 percent, whichever is larger.
The VT300-Z adds the telephoto: a 0.5-inch 48MP sensor at 190mm equivalent, f/2.2, with a 13-degree field of view. Skydio pitches it as observing a person at 1 km to read intent, which is the payload defense and site security buyers take. The VT300-L instead adds a 1-inch 50.3MP wide camera at 20mm equivalent, f/1.95, with a 93-degree field of view, plus an onboard light rated at 1,000 lumens that the VT300-Z does not carry. That combination is the inspection choice, and Skydio’s own sample imagery uses it for sub-millimeter corrosion capture.
Every camera on both packages caps video at 3840 x 2880, so the still resolution is where the sensors separate: 9248 x 6944 on the narrow, 8192 x 6144 on the wide, 8000 x 6000 on the telephoto. Swapping payloads is a workshop job rather than a field one, and the gimbal itself is rated to ±0.01 degrees of angular vibration across ±140 degrees of mechanical pitch.
X10 vs X10D: what changes for defense
Less than the marketing suggests, and the differences that exist are the ones that matter in a jammed environment. The X10D shares the X10’s airframe, dimensions, top speed, service ceiling, IP55 rating, camera packages, and six navigation cameras. Anyone describing six nav cameras as an X10D feature is reading the wrong spec sheet: the base X10 has the identical array.
What the X10D actually adds starts with the radio. Alongside Connect SL, it offers Connect MH, a multiband option spanning 1625 to 2500 MHz at 38 dBmi that switches channels dynamically to work around interference. The trade is real and worth knowing before purchase: Connect MH reaches 10 km (6.2 miles) against Connect SL’s 12 km (7.5 miles), and startup runs 60 seconds instead of 40. You buy frequency agility with range and speed.
The rest is software and security. NightSense, which flies obstacle avoidance in zero light using visible or infrared illumination, is X10D-only. The X10D holds visual inertial odometry at altitudes measured in kilometers for GPS-denied navigation, and Anchor Points let it return home on vision alone. Its SD cards are encrypted where the X10’s are not, it ships with no geofence limits on aircraft or controller, and it drops the X10’s Wi-Fi and cellular media offload entirely. It also runs a Qualcomm QRB5165 instead of the Snapdragon 865, accepts third-party controllers including Tomahawk’s, and meets the RAS-A interoperability profile with open MAVLINK.
Skydio has been an Army Short Range Reconnaissance provider since 2022, though not with this drone. The Army selected the X2D for SRR Tranche 1 that year and fielded it as the RQ-28A. The X10D carries Tranche 2 following a 2025 selection, which Skydio says makes it the only manufacturer to span both tranches. The March 2026 order that followed ran past $52 million for what Skydio describes as more than 2,500 X10Ds, and moved from bid to award in under 72 hours. Beyond the Army, Spain signed an 18 million euro X10D contract, Norway ordered systems in July 2025, and USAFCENT ordered $9 million of docks and X10s for Middle East airbase security.
Who uses the X10?
More than 1,200 public safety agencies, 45 of 51 US state DOTs, every US military branch, and 29 allied nations, per Skydio’s April 2026 funding announcement. Every X10D is built at Skydio’s Hayward, California facility, which the company describes as one of the largest drone plants outside China and says tests each unit across 550 checkpoints before delivery.
The X10 anchors Drone as First Responder programs through Skydio’s DFR Command platform, which has processed over 10 million 911 calls; the FAA now lets one pilot fly four X10s at once under streamlined BVLOS waivers.
Is the X10 NDAA-compliant and Blue UAS cleared?
Yes. In July 2026 the X10, Dock for X10, and R10 joined the X10D on the Blue UAS Cleared List, making Skydio’s whole lineup cleared and its DFR system the first and only Blue UAS-cleared one. Both aircraft are NDAA compliant and use AES-256 encrypted data links, with secure boot and an HSM-based root of trust. The security split between them is the storage: the X10D encrypts its SD cards, while the X10 leaves them unencrypted and encrypts only internal disk.
