What started out as a leisurely family hike turned scary when the group got lost in a almost 2,000 square mile Florida nature reserve last Sunday. Luckily an operator with a drone found the lost hikers quickly. #dronesforgood

Drone finds lost hiking family in nature reserve

Last Sunday a family set out on a hike in a nature preserve in Florida, however what was supposed to a relaxing afternoon turned scary quickly, according the Miami Herald when the group got lost in the almost 2,000 square mile nature preserve

The group had set out into the Blackwater Creek Preserve, the 1,993-acre conservation area in Plant City and got lost, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office

Luckily, a drone was able to find the hikers quickly at around 1 p.m. that afternoon. With help from the unmanned aircraft, deputies were directed to the exact location. In the video below that was posted by the agency on Facebook you can see the drone’s perspective of the group of hikers standing in the shade. A truck makes its way into the scene and the family was safely brought back to.

DJI has been keeping track of the number of lives rescued with the help of drones. In many cases those rescue situations were significantly more life-threatening and it is not clear is this rescue story would included in their tally, which according to the lastest information stands a at 410 lives saved, but regardless, in this rescue story from Florida a drone played a significant role.

  1. The footage looks and sounds like it’s coming not from a drone, but from a police helicopter. At 5:46 they are mentioning a helicopter.
