A boat captain spotted a beluga whale and captured the very rare mammal by a drone off the coast of San Diego for the first time. Since drones are becoming less expensive and more capable, amazing wildlife aerial images and footage is captured around the world.

Rare Beluga whale captured by drone

Captain and drone pilot, Domenic Biagini spotted the beluga whale and couldn’t believe his eyes.

“My jaw just dropped to the floor,” he said. “I had to pick it back up because I knew exactly what I was looking at.”

The beluga whale was seen on Friday morning, according to CBS8, about seven miles west of Mission Bay. It reportedly is the first time that this rare mammal has been seen so far south of its home in Alaska.

The beluga whale was initially spotted by another boat close by, but they had trouble getting pictures and contacted Biagini.

“ [They said] ‘can you please come in here and try to get us proof of what we have, because no one is going to believe us’,” said Biagini.

Biagini immediately understood how special this sighting was as he runs his own tour company, Gone Whale Watching San Diego.

“I want to stress how extraordinary that is,” he said with a big smile. “That would be like someone going out in their backyard and seeing a polar bear here in California. It just doesn’t make any sense.”

According to experts, the beluga whale is an ‘explorer’ that had wandered off from a pod. The mammal should have a good chance to survive as the waters off the coast of San Diego have plenty of food.
