Project Boom aims to break the sound barrier with a supersonic drone
Breaking the sound barrier with a drone is no simple feat, that’s why Broken Arrow native and Aerospace Engineering student from the University of Oklahoma, Collin Watson has been working on creating a global team of engineers to build a supersonic drone.
The global team strives to be the first-ever student team to break through the sound barrier with a drone. The unmanned aircraft will be about six feet long, weigh about 50 pounds and fly at a speed of 760 mph.
With over 180 students representing 70+ universities in 19 countries on 5 continents, Project Boom was created with the goal of being the first student group to reach speeds in excess of Mach 1 with a remote-controlled aircraft.
The supersonic drone should be flying by the summer of 2021, and by December of next year they hope to break the sound barrier.
The team could end up in the Guinness Book of World Records if they are successful in their endavour.
Project Boom is sponsored by SolidWorks, Siemens, and Rapid Application Group and has an impressive group of advisors, including people from Boeing, Blue Origin, Nasa, Lockheed Martin, and others.
Project Boom will be launching a crowdfunding campaign at the end of this month to raise money to build their supersonic drone. The team aims to raise $20,000. Anybody can contribute to the team here.
