Can you fly an FPV drone with AA batteries?
Can you make an FPV drone fly on AA batteries? Or better yet, can you make it do a roll when powered with off-the-shelf batteries? Check out this video from Rotor Riot in which over the course of several years (!) shot footage to see if this could be done.
Initially, the Rotor Riot guys tried to get the drone to fly with regular off-the-shelf Duracell AA batteries. However, the batteries are simply not powerful enough and do not have sufficient capacity to allow the drone to fly for any significant amount of time.
Without getting too much into the technical side of things, the crew decides to build a battery pack and see if they can make the FPV drone fly. First, the GoPro has to go as they need to save as much weight as possible to compensate for the additional weight from the Duracell batteries. Ultimately they are able to get the FPV drone to hover for a brief moment but to get the drone to fly and perform a roll a different approach is needed.
So, they turn to Sam a junior in aerospace engineering at the University of Tennesee in Knoxville…
