The drone delivery company Zipline has partnered with the Nigerian state Kaduna to deliver COVID-19 vaccines by fixed-wing drone.

Zipline's partnership with Kaduna will not be limited to COVID-19 vaccines, but will also include blood products, medications, and other vaccines, reports Reuters.

Over the last year, Zipline has successfully delivered more than 1 million doses of other vaccines in Africa.

“It will help ensure that millions of people in Kaduna State will always get the care they need,” Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai said.

Zipline offers an end-to-end cold chain distribution solution that can be used for COVID-19 vaccines such as Pfizer's that need to be kept at a very low temperature of -112°F throughout the entire transportation process.

The partnership with Zipline, allows the Kaduna health facilities to forego the purchase of ultra-low freezers and to make precision deliveries of the COVID-19 vaccine to where it is most needed.

Zipline is reportedly working with an unnamed ‘major COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer' to be able to distribute in all the areas where the drone delivery company is active.

Zipline currently offers its medical drone delivery service in Rwanda, Ghana, and the United States. In Nigeria, Zipline is in talks with other states as well to set up drone delivery services.

Especially in African Countries where cold-chain storage resources are limited and roads are often in poor shape or inaccessible at times, Zipline's drone delivery service can provide a solution that can be implemented quickly and offer great benefits.

Zipline's drone delivery service is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2021 with three distribution centers that will operate 30 drones each 24/7.
