Dutch border patrol to use thermal drones to fight human trafficking

The Dutch border patrol wants to use drones to support border security. Its purpose is to track down strangers hiding in trucks and containers. To this end, the border control agents want to use drones with thermal imaging cameras. With these specialty cameras, stowaways can be observed from the air at night.

“Innovative method”

The use of thermal drones to combat human smuggling is in addition to the regular deployment of investigators and detection dogs, Major Robert van Kapel told De Telegraaf. According to Van Kapel, the Marechaussee arrested more than four hundred illegal aliens in 2020 alone who wanted to reach England by truck, ferry or plane.

“This is one of the innovative ways we can use to make controls even more effective in our fight against human trafficking. Good information is essential in the game of cat and mouse with the people smugglers, who literally and figuratively cross all borders.”

Thermal cameras on drones

The Dutch border patrol wants to use drones with infrared cameras. These detect people’s body heat, even in the dark. These may be tricopters from Atlas Dynamics, which have recently been purchased by the Dutch Ministry of Defense. The drones must, among other things, fly above seaports such as those of Vlissingen and Rotterdam.
