Fighting drone registration “schemes” with free stickers
Pilot Institute, a leading drone school in the United States, is proud to announce that we have shipped more than 10,000 sets of free drone registration stickers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all drones that weigh over 250 grams to be registered when they are flown for recreational reasons. Every drone, flown under Part 107 drone rules, also needs to be registered regardless of weight. The cost is $5 and registration is valid for 3 years.
Most drone pilots know that their drones need to be registered to fly legally. However, when you search Google for “FAA Drone Zone” and other related queries, many people end up on websites that are confusingly similar to the FAA’s. These websites claim to register your drone but they can charge you
as much as $150 to do so.
In July of 2018, the FAA warned people about such websites in a bulletin entitled “FAA Says Avoid Drone Registration Schemes”. In the article, the agency strongly advised people to avoid sites that charge exorbitant fees for something that can be done directly on the FAA Drone Zone.
Pilot Institute interacts with numerous drone pilots each week. We frequently heard from our students about how they felt deceived by such websites. As a result, in July of 2021 Pilot Institute released an initiative to offer free drone registration stickers to at least 10,000 people. We also promised to advertise
our free stickers to people searching Google for related terms.
10,000 free drone registration stickers
Pilot Institute is proud to announce that we have achieved our initial goal and more than 10,000 people have received free drone registration stickers from us so far. We plan on continuing to offer free drone registration stickers to more people and build additional public awareness.
