LAANC provider, Airmap is dead! The drone service (!) provider recently folded.

Airmap is dead!

In a message shared with the drone community the company said:

AirMap has evolved many times over its storied history, from an app to create no fly zones over your house to a tool that empowers authorities to manage and monitor airspace. Over the past several months, our team has been hard at work building a next generation product. Our new mission is to enable autonomy and beyond visual line-of-sight flight at scale.

As a part of this new direction, we have made the difficult decision to shut down the AirMap application on June 22nd, 2023. This is not a decision we take lightly. We understand the significance that AirMap holds for so many, and we simply want to say thank you to the entire AirMap community for your years of commitment, contribution, and safe flying LAANC authorizations have been disabled.

If you have an authorization with a pending or accepted status that was scheduled prior to the shutdown date, this change will not affect you. If you have an authorization with a pending or accepted status that was scheduled after the shutdown date, our team will be in touch to discuss next steps.

Please contact support@airmap.com with any concerns or questions you may have. We hope to fly with you again soon.

The AirMap Team

On social media, many drone enthusiasts seemed very happy to see Airmap go as the startup had tried to monetize airspace access and were trying to create a system that would allow property owner to go after drone pilots for aerial trespassing.

“AirCrap is dead!!! Glad to have played a role in their demise,” one drone proponent said on Facebook.

“When your entire business model relies on screwing over the community you claim to help out…,” said another Part 107 certified drone pilot.

As for DroneXL, we can not say that we are sad to see Airmap go. “Nothing endures change!” Adios!
