Incident in a Quiet Town

The peaceful routine of Applegate, Michigan was disrupted on Monday, Jan. 8, following reports of a gunshot. The incident led to a significant response, which included a surveillance drone from the Sanilac County Sheriff Department, culminating in the arrest of a 52-year-old man, report Sanilac County News.

Rapid Response and Arrest

The drama unfolded in a garage near Applegate’s main intersection, where a local man reportedly discharged a firearm. Sanilac County Undersheriff Nathan Smith confirmed the arrest, stating, “It is my understanding that a subject had fired a firearm inside the garage of his home…He was taken into custody.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Heightened Law Enforcement Presence

A witness described a scene marked by urgency and caution. At least six patrol cars and an ambulance were positioned strategically around key locations downtown, including a party store parking lot, near the post office, and at the bank at Old 51 and Church Street. Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, the sheriff department deployed a surveillance drone, which was seen circling the garage. Armed officers maintained a safe distance, prepared for any escalation.

Legal Proceedings Begin

The suspect, identified as Jonathon Carl Geller from Applegate, faced immediate legal action. On Jan. 9, he was arraigned in 73A District Court, facing charges including assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and possession of firearms under the influence. His court proceedings are scheduled to continue with a probable cause conference on Jan. 23, and a preliminary examination on Jan. 30. Geller was released on a $2,500 personal bond.

This incident in Applegate serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of such events and the readiness of local law enforcement to respond swiftly and effectively to ensure public safety.
