Perrysburg Township Fire and EMS are taking a significant step forward in their rescue operations by incorporating Chinese-made DJI drones into their emergency response tactics. The department believes that these drones will significantly improve efficiency and response times, ultimately saving lives, report WTOL.

Drone Training and Certification

One of the primary challenges faced by the department in implementing the drone program is training responders to operate the unmanned aircraft effectively. Drone pilots are required to pass the FAA’s Part 107 exam to become certified to fly the drones.

Firefighter and paramedic Mike Thompson acknowledges that the drones have revolutionized the department’s capabilities, enabling them to conduct search and rescue operations, locate hot spots using thermal cameras, and even assist in water rescues by dropping lifejackets.

Staffing Challenges

Deputy Fire Chief James Rodriguez highlights another obstacle in fully deploying the drone program: staffing. The department aspires to have dedicated drone pilots available 24/7, 365 days a year, but they have not yet reached that goal. Chief Rodriguez remains optimistic about the program’s potential and how it can help first responders save critical time during rescue operations.

“Public safety is number one. I mean- to be able to search and find someone a lot faster with that aerial image is huge,” said Rodriguez. “To be able to have that tool in the box and be able to do that is just a plus. And it’s a win for the township and win for the community.”

Collaboration with Tiffin University

To further enhance their drone program, the Perrysburg Township Fire and EMS department is collaborating with Tiffin University and Professor Bruce Chambers, known as ‘the Dronefather.’ Chambers, a drone piloting specialist, will provide valuable expertise and guidance to the department as they continue to develop their drone capabilities.

Integration of DJI Drones

The integration of Chinese-made DJI drones into the Perrysburg Township Fire and EMS department’s emergency response tactics marks a significant advancement in their ability to save lives. Despite the challenges of training and staffing, the department remains committed to harnessing the power of these drones to improve public safety and serve their community more effectively.
