Palm Springs Police Deploy DJI Drone in Hiker Rescue, Aim to Expand Program

The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) recently utilized a DJI drone to assist in a hiker rescue on Museum Trail, demonstrating the potential of their expanding drone program. Although the mission was not entirely successful, the department continues to learn from each operation and refine their training.

PSPD and Fire Department Collaborate in Rescue Effort

On Wednesday, the Palm Springs Fire Department reportedly received assistance from both the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, who airlifted the hiker from the mountains to a nearby golf course, and the PSPD, who attempted to deliver water to the hiker using a drone.

Fire Chief Paul Alvarado emphasized the importance of swift action in such situations, stating, “We never want to see someone in that condition because it takes time for us to hike up those trails and get you out of there.”

Drone Capabilities and Challenges

The PSPD deployed their DJI Matrice 300 RTK drone, which they have been using for just over a year.

Lt. William Hutchinson, PSPD spokesperson, explained, “We attached five water bottles and a bag to the drone, and we lifted that and started going to the location.”

However, the drone lost connection with the pilot and returned to its starting point before the fire department could reach the hiker.

Expanding the Drone Program

Despite the setback, the PSPD remains committed to expanding its drone program. The department has secured substantial state grants to acquire more mobile, smaller models that officers can launch directly from their police cars. These drones are equipped with thermal imaging, a PA system, a spotlight, and can provide a bird’s eye view spanning several miles. Lt. Hutchinson highlighted the various applications of the drones, including searching for suspects, crime scene and traffic accident diagramming, and collaborating with the fire department on rescue missions in California.

The use of drones in the recent hiker rescue on Museum Trail showcases the potential of the PSPD’s expanding drone program. Despite the challenges faced during this particular mission, the department remains committed to refining their training and leveraging this technology to save lives more efficiently.

As Lt. Hutchinson stated, “The drones provide us with with that ability to save lives far faster than we we can today without that asset.”

The collaboration between the PSPD and the Palm Springs Fire Department in utilizing drones for rescue operations holds promise for future emergencies.
