Syracuse University’s Center of Excellence (CoE) is pioneering innovative drone-based techniques to assess building energy efficiency across New York state, according to a report from The Daily Orange.

Drone Technology for Building Assessment

SUNY ESF professors Shayan Mirzabeigi and Paul Crovella are spearheading groundbreaking efforts to use drone networks for analyzing building integrity and emissions. Their research has yielded two distinct flight patterns: a rectangular path designed for situations requiring high-resolution data collection, and an elliptical path that prioritizes faster data capture.

These drone systems could be particularly impactful for underserved areas.

As Mirzabeigi explained, “There is significant need for (low-income and disadvantaged communities) to improve the housing quality, to improve the energy efficiency in these buildings, so these techniques help to address both challenges.”

Testing Ground at BEST Lab

The Building Energy and Systems Testing (BEST) Lab, located on SU’s South Campus, serves as the primary testing facility for these innovative drone systems. The facility, originally a single-family home, has been transformed into a sophisticated laboratory where researchers can assess building controls and energy systems. This real-world testing environment provides valuable insights into the practical applications of drone-based energy analysis.

Challenges and Opportunities

The implementation of drone technology for building assessment isn’t without its hurdles. Weather conditions can significantly impact drone performance, and researchers continue to work on improving system reliability. Additionally, existing government regulations on drone usage present certain operational constraints. However, these challenges haven’t dampened the team’s enthusiasm or progress.

The technology’s development comes at a crucial time, as approximately 80% of New York’s buildings were constructed before modern energy codes were established. These drone systems could play a vital role in helping buildings meet the standards set by New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019.
