Drone Near Logan Airport Sparks Arrests and Safety Concerns

Two men were arrested Saturday after their drone flew dangerously close to Boston’s Logan International Airport, underscoring ongoing safety risks posed by unauthorized drone activity near critical airspace, reports CNN.

The Boston Police Department reported that the drone incident began Saturday afternoon when an officer detected an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operating near the airport. Using advanced drone-monitoring technology, authorities pinpointed the drone’s location, its flight path, and its operators, who were on Long Island, a largely uninhabited area in Boston Harbor.

Drone Interception and Arrests

The Boston Police Harbor Patrol Unit dispatched officers to Long Island’s decommissioned Health Campus, where they discovered three individuals. Upon arrival, two suspects fled but were captured, while the third reportedly escaped via a small vessel. Police located the drone inside one suspect’s backpack.

The arrested individuals, identified as Robert Duffy (42) of Charlestown and Jeremy Folcik (32) of Bridgewater, face trespassing charges, with additional fines or charges possible. Both are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.

FAA Regulations and Safety Risks

Drones pose a significant risk near airports due to the potential for near-collisions with manned aircraft. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), drone operators must avoid airports because it is difficult for pilots to detect and evade drones, particularly during takeoff or landing.

The FAA currently regulates over 791,000 registered drones split nearly evenly between recreational and commercial use. While drones are widely adopted across industries such as photography, agriculture, and public safety, misuse near restricted airspace remains a pressing issue.

“Operators are prohibited from flying drones over people or vehicles and must be aware of airspace restrictions,” the Boston Police Department emphasized in their statement.

The agency reiterated that even small drones can cause catastrophic damage to aircraft, potentially endangering lives.

Growing Concerns About Northeast Drone Sightings

This incident comes amid rising reports of unauthorized drone activity across the Northeastern United States. While officials have assured the public that these sightings do not pose immediate security threats, the frequency of such events is placing mounting pressure on federal agencies to act decisively.

The FAA continues to stress adherence to airspace rules, particularly near major airports, to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. Drone operators found violating regulations risk severe penalties, including fines and criminal charges.
