In a remarkable display of creative problem-solving and drone technology application, emergency responders used an unconventional approach – attaching a chicken cutlet to a drone – in their successful effort to rescue a stranded sheepadoodle from Lake Parsippany’s icy surface, reports NJ.com.

The dramatic rescue operation began Christmas Eve morning when Brooklyn, a 20-month-old sheepadoodle, escaped from her dog-sitter and ventured onto the frozen lake. What followed was a complex 24-hour rescue effort that demonstrated both the challenges and innovations in modern emergency response techniques.

Parsippany police, fire departments, and emergency rescue teams faced a persistent challenge as Brooklyn repeatedly fled from conventional rescue attempts, forcing responders to adapt their strategy. The breakthrough came when resourceful neighbors and officers conceived the idea of using a drone equipped with an unlikely payload – a chicken cutlet – to lure the frightened dog to safety.

While the drone strategy helped make progress, the rescue effort wasn’t over when Brooklyn finally left the ice. The dog bolted through the neighborhood upon reaching land, leading to an extended search that concluded Christmas morning when she was discovered on a neighbor’s porch. The dog-sitters finally secured her safe return using salmon as bait.

“Obviously, not being your dog, you’re caring for someone else’s, you’re caring for someone else’s, and we kept updating them, but we just kept praying,” said Kamili Williams, one of Brooklyn’s caretakers during the ordeal.

Following the rescue, Brooklyn was taken to an emergency veterinarian for evaluation. Apart from a minor cut, all medical tests came back positive. The pink coloring noticed on her coat was attributed to dye from her leash bleeding during the extended exposure to wet conditions.

This incident showcases how public safety agencies are increasingly combining traditional rescue techniques with innovative drone applications. The creative use of a food-equipped drone represents a novel approach to emergency response that could inform future rescue operations involving animals.

The successful rescue highlights not only the versatility of drone technology in emergency situations but also the importance of adaptability and creative thinking in public safety operations. As drone technology continues to evolve, such innovative applications may become more common in emergency response scenarios.
