Westfield Police Department advances its capabilities by training officers and transforming a cruiser into a mobile drone station, enabling daily aerial support for community protection. This move integrates advanced technology into routine patrols, as detailed in a recent report from The Westfield News.

Officer Training Completes the Setup

The department recently trained three patrol officers to handle drones on a daily basis. Officers John Fitzgibbons and Brandon Meimiec, among those certified, now operate the equipment from an outfitted cruiser that carries the drones and essential gear. This setup creates a portable flight deck, allowing launches directly from the vehicle during shifts. Such mobility streamlines responses, reducing setup time in dynamic situations.

Matrice 300 Enhances Operational Efficiency

Police Chief Jerome Pitoniak praises the DJI Matrice 300 RTK, stating, “It’s a good tool for us.”

This DJI enterprise drone weighs about 13.9 pounds (6.3 kg) with batteries and supports flight times up to 55 minutes. It achieves maximum speeds of 51 mph (23 m/s) and operates in temperatures from -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C), with an IP45 rating that protects against water jets. The drone’s six-directional sensing detects obstacles, while features like Smart Track and PinPoint aid in tracking subjects precisely.

This integration highlights trends in public safety, where drones like the Matrice 300 improve search efforts and scene assessments without risking personnel.
