Sig Sauer to begin flight tests of armed UAS quadcopter

Armed drones continue to move beyond theory and into practical testing, and Sig Sauer is now preparing to begin flight tests of an armed unmanned quadcopter that signals a deeper shift in how small drones may be used on future battlefields, as Janes reports.

The platform, known as the Fire Storm 250, represents a collaboration between Sig Sauer and Israel Aerospace Industries and reflects growing interest in persistent, reusable aerial systems capable of delivering controlled direct fire rather than one time strike effects.

Unlike loitering munitions or improvised weaponized commercial drones, the Fire Storm 250 is being developed as a purpose built system, designed from the start to combine endurance, hover capability, and precision fire under human control.

What the Fire Storm 250 is designed to do

The Fire Storm 250 is a vertical takeoff and landing quad rotor platform intended for short range, high tempo tactical missions where persistent aerial presence matters more than speed or payload mass. Its design allows launches from confined or uneven locations such as forward operating points, urban compounds, or improvised sites without any runway infrastructure.

IAI positions the Fire Storm 250 as an endurance focused tactical rotorcraft, with reported flight endurance of up to three hours. That kind of on station time gives operators the ability to observe, confirm, and respond to developing situations without constant recovery and relaunch cycles, something battery powered multirotors struggle to provide.

What truly sets the Fire Storm 250 apart from most small unmanned aircraft is its integrated weapon system. The drone carries a stabilized machine gun mount with an onboard ammunition supply of roughly 200 rounds.

Combined with automated fire control and stabilization algorithms, the system is designed to support accurate, short duration engagements while hovering or moving slowly through controlled flight paths.

The limited ammunition load makes the mission profile clear. This is not a platform built for sustained firefights or wide area suppression.
