The Finnish Defence Forces are doubling down on micro UAV power, announcing the procurement of the Parrot ANAFI UKR to strengthen intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities across the force, as Parrot announced it in a Press Release.
Deliveries are expected to begin in early 2026. The total value of the program, including VAT, is nearly โฌ15 million. Nordic partner Boston Group will support distribution and service for this interesting and advanced program.
This is not Finlandโs first flight with Parrot. The country has operated micro UAV systems from Parrot for years, starting with the ANAFI Thermal SE and later integrating significant volumes of the ANAFI USA beginning in 2023.
Those systems were used for training, field familiarization, and the development of ISR tactics and procedures. Over time, they became part of readiness activities and exercises, operating in Finlandโs demanding terrain and harsh climate.
Built for Contested Skies
The Finnish Defence Forces emphasize what has become obvious across modern battlefields. Warfare is now layered with unmanned systems operating simultaneously at different altitudes and roles. Micro UAVs are no longer niche tools. They are frontline assets.
ANAFI UKR was developed using operational lessons from Ukraine. That experience shaped a system designed to survive in contested electromagnetic environments while remaining simple enough for rapid unit level deployment.
Key capabilities include:
โข Autonomous navigation in GPS denied or jammed environments
โข Embedded AI for real time classification and tracking
โข Anti spoofing frequency hopping military radio
โข Hardened cybersecurity architecture
โข Extended endurance for persistent observation
โข High wind resistance and environmental reliability
โข Compact, soldier portable design
โข Automated mission workflows to reduce operator burden
In practical terms, this means tactical reconnaissance, target acquisition, border surveillance, and overwatch missions can be conducted with faster tempo and stronger data security.
From Consumer Pioneer to Military Specialist
There is an interesting historical arc here.
Before pivoting heavily into defense, Parrot made history in 2010 with the launch of the Parrot AR.Drone. It was widely recognized as the first consumer friendly, smartphone controlled quadcopter. Controlled via iPhone or iPad over Wi Fi, equipped with front and downward cameras, and powered by four brushless motors, it introduced app based flight to the civilian market years before drones became mainstream household gadgets.

That early bet on connectivity and intuitive control quietly laid technical foundations that now reappear in hardened, encrypted, battlefield ready systems.
Over the years, Parrot pivoted from mass consumer drones to secure European designed professional and military UAV platforms. The ANAFI UKR represents the sharpest expression of that evolution so far.
A Strategic Step for Finland
According to Chris Roberts, Senior Vice President at Parrot, the procurement reinforces the growing importance of unmanned ISR and target acquisition in modern operations. He described ANAFI UKR as a materially enhanced capability shaped directly by battlefield feedback, with ongoing upgrades driven by user experience at unit level.
For Finland, this is not just a drone purchase. It is a refinement of an ecosystem already in service, now upgraded with combat proven insights.
As Europe accelerates efforts to secure sovereign defense technologies, Finlandโs move signals confidence in a European designed autonomous ISR platform built for resilience, mobility, and secure operations in complex environments.
DroneXLโs Take
Parrotโs journey from launching the AR.Drone into living rooms in 2010 to delivering hardened ISR systems to European armed forces is one of the most dramatic pivots in the drone industry.
Finlandโs โฌ15 million investment shows how seriously smaller, NATO adjacent nations view micro UAV capability. In modern warfare, the smallest aircraft often carry the biggest advantage.
