Masked Attackers Burn Ukrainian Thermal Imaging Factory in Czech Republic

A group of masked individuals set fire to the Archer-LPP production facility in Pardubice, Czech Republic on the night of March 19 to 20, destroying almost all of the plant’s production capacity, including finished thermal imaging sights and equipment in the process of manufacture, as KTVB reported.

Czech authorities are investigating the attack as a terrorist act. No one was injured. Damage is estimated at approximately $1.1 million.

The group that claimed responsibility, an obscure organization calling itself the Earthquake Faction, said it was targeting an Israeli weapons production site. The building they burned produces thermal imaging optics for Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian forces.

They got the wrong country, the wrong company, and the wrong war.

What Archer-LPP Actually Makes

Archer is Ukraine’s only manufacturer of cooled thermal imaging sights. After Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the company relocated production to Pardubice, establishing Archer-LPP as a subsidiary of LPP Holding, the Czech defense group that operates across unmanned systems, avionics, and military electronics.

The Pardubice facility produces the AT-300 thermal imaging sight, the primary thermal optic for the Stugna-P anti-tank guided missile system, along with other night-vision and surveillance optics supplied to the Ukrainian armed forces.

Thermal imaging sights are not exotic technology, but they are critical. A tank crew that can see in the dark and through smoke is a fundamentally different threat than one that can’t. Destroying the only Ukrainian facility producing cooled thermal sights for one of Ukraine’s most effective anti-tank weapons systems is a serious operational blow regardless of what the attackers thought they were burning.

Archer-LPP spokesperson Olha Duplichuk confirmed that almost all production was destroyed, including finished products in the warehouse and items in active manufacture. She said deliveries to Ukraine could be delayed by at least a month.

CEO Oleksandr Yaremenko, posting on Facebook from the smoking facility, assured partners that all contractual obligations would be fulfilled and products would ship on time. That’s the kind of statement you make when you have to make it, while standing in front of the damage.

The Earthquake Faction and the Wrong Address

The Earthquake Faction claimed responsibility on Telegram, stating it had targeted LPP Holding because of its planned cooperation with Israeli defense company Elbit Systems. That cooperation, a joint drone development agreement that LPP and Elbit announced several years ago, never actually began.

The Czech Ministry of Defense canceled the relevant procurement tender before any production started. No Israeli drones were ever manufactured in Pardubice. The Elbit partnership was announced and then quietly died on a government spreadsheet.

The attackers burned down a facility producing thermal sights for Ukrainian soldiers based on a project that no longer existed, at a company that has no Israeli production relationship, in a building that Czech firefighters confirmed contained mainly construction materials stored for a planned renovation rather than the production equipment the group thought it was destroying. On practically every meaningful dimension, the attack was based on false information.

That raises a question that several Czech security officials have been careful not to dismiss publicly: where did the Earthquake Faction get its information, and why was it so specifically wrong in ways that were still operationally damaging?

The Russian Sabotage Question

Archer-LPP spokesperson Duplichuk said the company does not exclude a Russian trace in the organization of the attack. Czech former military intelligence chief Andor ล รกndor raised the same possibility in Czech media.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiลก, unprompted, referenced the 2014 Vrbฤ›tice ammunition depot explosions, which Czech intelligence later attributed to Russian military intelligence. He did not need to make that comparison. He made it anyway.

The pattern fits a documented Russian strategy of using proxy groups, false-flag operations, and politically convenient cover stories to conduct sabotage against European defense suppliers supporting Ukraine.

In June 2025, approximately 150 activists from the Stop Arming Israel movement stormed the OIP defense factory in Belgium and destroyed military equipment being prepared for shipment to Ukraine. Whether those activists were acting independently or were influenced, directed, or informed by Russian intelligence channels is an open question that Belgian authorities are still working through.

The Earthquake Faction is an entirely unknown group. Its stated motive, Israeli weapons, is factually incorrect for the specific facility it targeted. Its operational effect, destroying production capacity for Ukrainian thermal imaging optics, is directly beneficial to Russian forces fighting against those optics on the front line.

Czech authorities are working with four investigative theories, all involving deliberate arson, and the National Center for Counter-Terrorism, Extremism and Cybercrime is involved alongside standard law enforcement.

The Broader Context Inside LPP Holding

LPP Holding, the parent company, is a larger and more complex defense group than the AP’s initial reporting suggested. Beyond Archer-LPP’s thermal imaging work, the holding develops AI-guided strike drones, including the MTS family of combat platforms with confirmed deployments in Ukraine, and unveiled its Narwhal cruise missile with serial production at the Pardubice complex scheduled to begin in March 2026.

The Narwhal carries a 265-lb warhead to a range of approximately 422 miles using GPS-independent visual navigation, placing it in the same class as Russian cruise missiles currently striking Ukrainian cities.

Whether the Archer-LPP fire affected the Narwhal production timeline has not been confirmed by the company. LPP spokeswoman Martina Tauberovรก said the fire had not significantly affected the holding’s overall production, suggesting the damage was contained to the Archer-LPP subsidiary rather than the broader facility complex.

DroneXL’s Take

Here’s what I find genuinely significant: the Earthquake Faction burned down the wrong thing and still caused real damage to Ukraine’s war effort.

That combination, operational incompetence paired with genuine harm, is worth thinking about carefully. An attack carried out by a group that had bad intelligence, targeted a non-existent Israeli weapons program, and burned a building full of construction materials instead of the production floor it wanted still managed to destroy a month’s worth of thermal imaging deliveries to Ukrainian forces.

Accidental effectiveness is not the same thing as planned effectiveness, but the outcome for the soldiers waiting for those sights is the same either way.

The false-flag question is not paranoia. It is a reasonable inference from documented Russian behavior, a pattern of using useful idiots and ideologically motivated proxies to conduct attacks that serve Russian strategic interests while leaving deniable cover stories behind.

The investigators in Prague are asking the right questions. Whether the answers point to a disorganized fringe group that stumbled onto a damaging target by accident, or to something more deliberately organized, will determine whether this is a crime story or a war story. Right now it might be both.
