HoverAir is teasing what could become one of the first modular self-flying cameras, showing a detachable camera unit with mechanical latches and gold contact connectors across official teaser images and short videos. The campaign went live July 23, 2026, on the company’s coming-soon page, which unlocks a new image every day.
Zero Zero Robotics, the company behind the HoverAir brand, has not confirmed a product name, specifications, or a launch date. DroneXL has followed this brand closely since our November 2024 review of the X1 ProMax, and the teaser points somewhere the pocket drone category has never gone: a flying platform built to accept a swappable camera module.

HoverAir Shows Latches, Gold Contacts, And A Caged Airframe
HoverAir’s teaser campaign consists so far of three renders and short video clips that show a black rectangular camera module with Hover branding, mechanical latches paired with gold contact connectors, and a complete drone wrapped in full propeller guards topped by a colored LED status ring.
One render shows the closed unit in isometric view with its protective cage. Another shows a front silhouette with the camera module sitting at the center of the body, and a third gives a top view with a green-to-blue light ring circling a raised dome.

That ring is new. Nothing in the current HoverAir lineup carries it, and the camera block itself shows latch hardware and gold electrical contacts, the kind of interface an engineer only designs when a part is meant to come off.
When I checked the coming-soon page on July 24, it offered an email signup for launch notifications, a prompt to come back tomorrow to unlock more, and a cap of two submissions per visitor. This is a drip reveal, one asset per day, built to keep people refreshing.
Tech leaker Igor Bogdanov, who posts as Quadro_News on X, pushed the clips to a wider audience on July 23. He claims he knows the full product and is only showing a small part, and he tagged both DJI and Insta360, which tells you who he thinks should be paying attention.
Zero Zero Robotics Keeps Betting On Category Firsts
Zero Zero Robotics has built the HoverAir brand on category firsts, launching the palm-takeoff X1 as a self-flying selfie camera in 2023 and following it with the Aqua, the waterproof flying camera DroneXL covered at its global launch in May 2026.
The company’s first product, the Hover Camera Passport, folded like a book in 2016, and the startup raised $25 million that year to chase the self-flying idea while DJI owned every headline.

The X1 ProMax pushed the formula hardest, packing 8K recording and a 1/1.3-inch sensor into 6.8 ounces (192.5 grams). DroneXL’s review in November 2024 came away surprised by how much camera Zero Zero squeezed into that little cage.
Every one of those cameras was integrated. Lens, sensor, and airframe were tuned as one sealed unit, which is exactly what a modular design gives up. Each connector is a potential failure point, and each latch costs grams.
Grams matter in this category. The original X1 weighs about 4.4 ounces (125 grams), far under the 8.8-ounce (250-gram) registration threshold that shaped the entire pocket drone market. HoverAir hasn’t said where the new aircraft lands.
GoPro Karma Turned Modularity Into A Cautionary Tale
GoPro launched the GoPro Karma in October 2016 as a modular system with no built-in camera, asking buyers to purchase a separate Hero camera, mount it in GoPro’s own stabilizer, and click that assembly into the drone before flying, a design that unraveled within weeks.
At launch the Karma accepted the Hero4 Black, Hero4 Silver, and Hero5 Black. The pitch was flexibility: the same gimbal clicked out of the drone and into a handheld grip, so one camera served both jobs.
In early November 2016, roughly two weeks after units reached customers, GoPro recalled about 2,500 Karmas because some were losing power in midair. The company traced the failures to the battery latch. Batteries could pop loose in flight, and a drone without a battery is a falling object.
GoPro refunded every buyer, redesigned the latch, and relaunched the Karma on February 1, 2017. It wasn’t enough. On January 8, 2018, the company cut around 250 jobs and left the drone business, citing thin margins and what it called a hostile regulatory environment.
Open Questions Start With Weight And US Availability
The teaser leaves unanswered the questions that will decide whether this drone matters: total takeoff weight, whether the camera module carries its own gimbal, price against integrated rivals, and whether the FCC foreign drone restrictions keep it out of American hands the way they blocked the Aqua.
The Aqua reached more than 50 countries on day one while US buyers stayed locked out. Nothing here suggests the new aircraft escapes the same wall.
The gimbal question cuts deeper. A detachable module either carries its own stabilization hardware, which raises the cost of every extra module, or leans on electronic stabilization and gives up some smoothness. The renders don’t answer it, and HoverAir isn’t talking yet.
DroneXL’s Take
My first thought when those latches appeared on screen was the GoPro Karma, one of the first drones to fail spectacularly.
Younger readers never had the pleasure. The Karma had no built-in camera and no fixed gimbal: you bought a GoPro camera, installed it in the brand’s gimbal, then inserted that package into the drone.
It was also the drone whose battery fell out mid-flight. You can’t invent a worse origin story for modular flight.
So modularity carries a bad track record in this industry. A recall followed by a full market exit: that’s what happened the last time a company made removable parts the headline feature of a consumer drone.
To be fair, 2026 is not 2016. Zero Zero has shipped palm-launch tracking that works and a drone that takes off from water, and it engineers its own hardware down to the connector. If any company has earned the benefit of the doubt on a latch, it’s this one.
But a latch is still a latch, and physics hasn’t gotten friendlier since 2016. Whether a modular pocket drone beats today’s integrated designs is an open question, not a prediction.
It stays open until we put one in the air and try to shake the module loose. We’ll have to test it and see.
