Valqari CEO Ryan Walsh rebuilt his delivery drone in eight weeks after the original aircraft could not handle Northwestern Medicine’s specimen boxes, he told DroneXL in an interview on Monday. The replacement, the VQ1600, roughly doubled the payload and weight of its predecessor and kept the hospital program’s delivery record perfect. Walsh also ranked the patent portfolios of the delivery giants and confirmed 73 granted patents of his own.
Walsh Rebuilt The Delivery Drone In Eight Weeks
The original Valqari aircraft flying at Northwestern Medicine’s Delnor Hospital campus in Geneva, Illinois, was not strong enough for the specimen boxes the program needed to move, so the company redesigned the entire airframe under a deadline that gave the team roughly eight weeks to deliver a new machine.
“Our initial drones built for Northwestern Medicine weren’t quite strong enough for the task, so we needed to redesign our airframes for that operation under a very tight timeline,” Walsh said. “Luckily, the redesigned airframe performed beyond our expectations, achieving a 100% success rate with Northwestern Medicine.”
The hospital system’s own published numbers back him up. The pilot moved 303 packages without a single damaged sample or temperature excursion, cutting runs that took about half an hour on the ground down to roughly four minutes in the air.
Northwestern Medicine paused the pilot at the end of 2024 to plan its next phases, with longer distances and higher volumes on the table. The rebuilt aircraft is what those phases inherit, and its test record so far is the reason the partnership survived its own hardware problem.
Walsh’s explanation for how a small company rebuilds an aircraft that fast reaches back to his military service. “I was Ranger Special Operations. Raids, ambushes. We were a garage startup,” he said.
The Landing Spot Is The Product, Not The Aircraft
Walsh started working on the problem in 2013, after cold-weather package deliveries convinced him that the hard part of drone delivery was never the flying but the last inch, the exact spot where a package changes hands, and Valqari has been patenting that layer ever since.
The company incorporated in 2017 around a smart mailbox built to receive drone deliveries securely. DroneXL covered Valqari back in 2020, when it was a startup raising $500,000 for that mailbox. Today Walsh confirms 73 granted patents across the globe, and his advice to the rest of the industry is blunt: worry about the IP.
He speaks about the aircraft side of the business with the respect of someone who watched it consume better-funded companies. “SkyDrop was an amazing company,” Walsh said of the delivery pioneer led by Matt Sweeny, which flew the first FAA-approved drone delivery in the United States in 2015 and shut down in 2024.
Walsh Ranks Amazon First Among The Delivery Giants
Asked to rank the major players on intellectual property, Walsh put DJI’s overall portfolio at the top by sheer size, called Amazon’s the most dominant in the delivery space specifically, placed Wing in the middle, and said Zipline is now proving it sees the value of ground infrastructure.
“Technically, DJI has the largest overall patent portfolio, but Amazon has one of the most dominant portfolios in the delivery space,” Walsh said. “I am most impressed with Amazon’s portfolio. They have patented significantly more than their current operations suggest.”
That last observation should stop readers cold. The company running 12 drones over a Nebraska suburb holds delivery patents that reach far beyond anything it currently flies.
Zipline earned Walsh’s attention for its dock and tower work. “Zipline is seeing the value of infrastructure in their systems as shown by their tower systems. It’s a very intriguing system,” he said. Wing sits “somewhere in the middle, but further away from ground infrastructure overall,” Walsh added, pointing to its winch pickup approach.
A State DOT Contract Stays Unnamed For Now
Valqari has been selected for work with a state department of transportation and its local test counties, Walsh confirmed, though he asked to keep the agency’s name out of print until it makes its own announcement, a request DroneXL is honoring in this story.
The unnamed detail matters less than the category. A state DOT buying into the landing layer means public infrastructure money is starting to treat the ground side of drone delivery as roadwork, not as an accessory to somebody’s aircraft program.

Which side of this industry keeps aging well? The delivery race gets measured in aircraft: range, payload, route counts. Walsh keeps winning on the square meter where the package actually lands.
Look at the six-year arc. When DroneXL first wrote about Valqari in 2020, it was a mailbox startup with $500,000 in fresh funding. SkyDrop had the historic firsts and the headlines. In 2026, SkyDrop is gone, and the mailbox company has 73 granted patents, a hospital program with a perfect delivery record, a rebuilt aircraft in its hangar, and a state DOT contract waiting for a press release.
