Wingcopter, the German company best known for drones that deliver medicine and parcels, launched the Wingcopter 262 on September 14. It’s an all-electric reconnaissance drone that Wingcopter says stays airborne for up to six hours and reaches 93 miles (150 kilometers) at a take-off weight of 22 pounds (10 kilograms).
The tilt-rotor aircraft takes off and lands vertically and cruises like a fixed-wing plane. It’s built for military and security customers who need a camera over a border, a convoy route or a front line. The 262 is the first new aircraft from Wingcopter Security & Defence, a business unit the company created only months ago, and Wingcopter says Jens Plötner, the state secretary for armaments at Germany’s defense ministry, attended the launch.

Wingcopter 262 Trades Cargo for Six Hours of Surveillance
The Wingcopter 262 is a modular, battery-powered VTOL drone for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). Wingcopter lists up to six hours of flight time, a 93-mile tactical range and a 22-pound take-off weight. Its 262-centimeter (8.6-foot) wingspan gives the aircraft its name.
Every figure here comes from Wingcopter’s launch announcement and product page, and no independent flight data has been published yet. The aircraft measures 103 by 53 by 17 inches (262 x 134 x 42 cm), the landing gear retracts, and a built-in heating system lets it run from minus 31°F to 122°F (-35°C to +50°C).
Payloads swap through a modular gimbal. Wingcopter lists stabilized 360-degree EO/IR cameras with AI-assisted detection, naming 80x zoom and HD thermal as example options, for picking out vehicles, people and movement at night or in bad visibility.
Wingcopter Pitches One Operator and No Launcher
Wingcopter says one operator can assemble the 262 without special tools and have it ready to fly within minutes, with no runway or launch equipment needed. Quick-swap batteries are meant to cut the aircraft’s time on the ground between sorties.
That is the practical argument for tilt-rotor VTOL over catapult-launched fixed-wing ISR drones: the 262 lifts off from a clearing and comes back down the same way. According to the product page, the ground station and live FPV feed are ready in the same window as the aircraft.
Wingcopter also says the 262 is designed to plug into the open architectures of existing battle management systems. Neither the announcement nor the product page names which ones.
Navigation Tech Carries Lessons From Ukraine
Wingcopter says the 262 can operate in GNSS-denied environments using positioning technology proven under real operating conditions in Ukraine. The product page lists beacon-based navigation, jamming-resistant GPS and visual supplementary navigation. Its datalink, tested against electronic warfare, is rated beyond 93 miles.
Satellite jamming is the first thing any reconnaissance drone sold into that war has to survive, so the Ukraine pedigree is the claim doing the most work in Wingcopter’s pitch. It’s also the one Wingcopter leaves unsourced. Neither the announcement nor the product page says whose navigation system it is, or which Ukrainian units flew it.

Wingcopter Security & Defence Ties the 262 to TAF Industries
The 262 arrives a few months after Wingcopter formed its Security & Defence unit, which adds defense and security work to the company’s logistics and surveying business. Under the Build with Ukraine initiative, Wingcopter is also working with TAF Industries to make the 262 available to Ukraine.
That existing business runs from the Wingcopter 198 delivery drone to long-distance LiDAR surveys and LiDAR work in Japan.

The TAF relationship dates to February 13, when the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding at the Munich Security Conference to form a joint venture. Under that agreement, TAF, which the two companies describe as Ukraine’s largest drone producer, will provide licensed designs of its combat-tested reconnaissance drones. Wingcopter will provide the factory capacity and engineering to build them in Germany, away from the wartime risks facing Ukrainian plants.
It fits the direction Kyiv has been pushing with Ukraine’s 10 drone export hubs across Europe, and it isn’t Germany’s only such pairing: DroneXL has also reported on German-Ukrainian production of Linza drones. Wingcopter’s announcement doesn’t give a price, a first customer or a delivery date for the 262.
DroneXL’s Take
Wingcopter moving into defense was the obvious move. German drone money has swung hard toward reconnaissance and strike, from Quantum Systems’ German Army reconnaissance contract to Stark Defence’s €500 million funding round. A company with a flying VTOL airframe and a factory is exactly what that market is buying.
I don’t read this as Wingcopter abandoning the drones-for-good work that made its name. The company frames the new unit as an addition to logistics and surveying, not a replacement. Building Ukrainian-proven reconnaissance drones in Germany, away from the front, is good for Ukraine, and the TAF deal is the part of this launch I like most.
The part I’d hold back on is the spec sheet. Six hours of battery endurance at 22 pounds is an excellent number for an electric VTOL, and neither the announcement nor the product page says what payload was aboard when it got there. An 80x zoom gimbal and a jam-resistant datalink both draw power. My read: until someone flies the 262 with its real mission kit and publishes the log, six hours is Wingcopter’s figure, not a field-tested one.
