Both the DJI Osmo 360 and Insta360 X5 are excellent 360 cameras, and the honest starting point is that you would be happy with either one. Dynamic range: the Osmo 360’s clearest edge

Under a tree canopy, the toughest lighting condition for a 360 camera, the Osmo 360 held sky detail and blue tone where the X5 blew out to a flat white in full auto. Enabling the X5’s adaptive tone or HDR modes narrowed the gap but did not close it, and HDR mode caps the X5 at 5.7K resolution. In wide-open, evenly lit scenes both cameras expose about equally well, so this difference matters most for exactly the kind of complex, mixed-light shooting where reviewers actually rely on 360 cameras.

The spec sheet favors DJI on paper

The Osmo 360 carries a nearly 1-inch square sensor against the X5’s 1/1.28-inch sensor, the kind of gap that shows up directly in low light. It also captures 8K at 50 frames per second where the X5 tops out at 30fps in 8K, records 10-bit color regardless of profile against the X5’s 8-bit (with the X5’s flat color profile further limited to 5.7K), and shoots 120-megapixel spherical stills against the X5’s 72-megapixel ceiling. On raw numbers, DJI leads across the board.

Build and ecosystem: where the X5 pulls ahead

The X5 introduced user-replaceable lenses, a genuine advantage given how exposed and fragile 360 lenses are against a hard knock. DJI’s Osmo 360 lenses require sending the camera in for service, though DJI’s repair cost works out cheaper than an Insta360 replacement kit. The Osmo 360 is slightly lighter at 183 grams against the X5’s roughly 200 grams, and its screen rotates to match how the camera is mounted, an advantage the X5’s fixed vertical display does not match. The X5, in turn, offers considerably more in-camera shooting modes, including InstaFrame, time-lapse, time shift, bullet time, and burst, where the Osmo 360 launched with a shorter list DJI has been steadily expanding.

If you already own DJI gear

Magnetic mounts and batteries carry across DJI’s ecosystem: Osmo 360 mounts work with the Action 5 Pro and Action 4, and DJI mics pair directly with the Osmo 360. If you already shoot D-Log on a DJI drone or action camera, staying in the ecosystem for color-grading consistency is a real, non-spec reason to choose the Osmo 360.

What changed since: the X6 and Osmo 360 II

Both brands have moved a generation since this comparison. Insta360’s X6 launched at $699.99 a day ahead of DJI’s next model, and our full X6 review covers what’s actually new. DJI’s answer, the Osmo 360 II, launched with 8K60 and no confirmed American price at time of writing, which currently makes the X6 the easier of the two to actually buy in the US.
