This week a landmark white paper has been presented to the UK Government to accelerate the growth of the drone industry and to transform the UK’s capability to achieve world-leadership in drone technology. The report received unanimous industry support after a three month consultation period, according to Post & Parcel.

The white paper titled, ‘The commercialisation of the UK air drone industry‘ has been written by the Drone Delivery Group, which brings together over 300 companies and organizations that are active in the drone industry.

The report calls for the realization of new testing grounds to deliver public safety, advance the industry, and support the UK Plc to become a global leader in drone technology.

It is said that the transformative impact of drone technology will be a game-changer for the global economy. Recently, Barclays predicted that the global drone market will grow ten-fold over the next five years, reaching an estimated value of £30 billion, with a potential £77 billion in cost savings.

‘The commercialisation of the UK air drone industry’ report highlights that the UK has an opportunity now to take a leading role in the rapidly developing global drone industry.

It has taken two years for the white paper to be finalized and it points out the critical need for a safe infrastructure where unmanned aircraft can operate safely in airspace that is potentially shared with other drones or manned aircraft. The report was followed by a thorough public consultation process and concludes that a ‘national approach is urgently needed’ in order to ensure this ‘vital foundation for the drone industry’ is realized quickly.

Robert Garbett, Chairman of the UK Drone Delivery Group, said: “The presentation of this White Paper to the Government is a huge milestone for the progress of the UK drone industry. The industry guidance is clear, and the potential benefits are vast…
