DJI Matrice 300 flies autonomously underground in Aussie mines

Reportedly this is the first time ever that a DJI Matrice 300 is flying autonomously underground in two Australian mines. The underground drone flight was organized by drone autonomy company Emesent. The Matrice 300 drone had been outfitted with a LiDAR system to allow it to successfully finds its way through the mines.

TechAU reports that this was a significant milestone, particularly after Emesent’s simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) autonomous flight system Hovermap was given early access to the next generation industrial drone in June this year.

The Australian mines were testing Emesent’s 3D LiDAR-based SLAM tech that enables drones to fly inside mines where GPS is not available, as well as beyond-visual-line-sight into unmapped areas. This technology allows mining companies to map, navigate, and collect data in otherwise hard to access environments.

The video below shows you how the DJI Matrice 300 is flying its way through the mine, complete with a visualization of the collected data. As you can imagine having a 3D map of an underground environment is incredibly useful for mining operations.
