‘Invaluable’ Drones Elevate Police Response in Kentucky
In an initiative to enhance safety and efficiency, several local first responder agencies congregated for the second successive year at the Hardin County Fairgrounds in Kentucky. The purpose? To sharpen their drone operation skills under the expert guidance of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and Seiler Geospatial.
Adam Johnston, the forensics expert from Seiler Geospatial, outlined the mission. The goal was to cultivate “very skilled and comfortable” drone pilots.
Around 15 different agencies were part of this two-day intensive indoor and outdoor training, simulating various scenarios where drone technology proves critical.
“Drones can investigate crashes from a safe distance, conduct search and rescue operations… or safely document natural disasters,” Johnston highlighted.
Drones are agile, prompt, and possess the ability to cover a substantial area, significantly more than any human. Certain drone models even come with infrared capabilities.
A recent event underscored the vital role drones play in law enforcement. An Elizabethtown resident, engaged in a standoff with the police, was apprehended after a four-hour tussle.
A police drone equipped with infrared technology was instrumental in locating the suspect. Sgt. Travis Cook of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, a drone operator for nearly three years, navigated the drone that got shot down in this incident.
Cook was initially skeptical about drones’ value in the sheriff’s office, but the Elizabethtown incident made him a convert.
“Yes, their drone got shot down, but that very easily could have been a deputy instead,” he remarked, emphasizing how drones can prevent potentially fatal outcomes.
Today, Cook finds the drone “invaluable.” He credits the training for enabling exchanges of insights about drone methodologies and technologies.
As he succinctly put it, it offers a chance to “compare notes and see where my shortcomings are.”
Thus, the meeting of minds and machines at the Hardin County Fairgrounds has sparked a fresh era of technologically-enhanced law enforcement.
