Russia, once bolstering its military capabilities with imported Iranian Shahed 136 drones, is now pivoting to reinforce its defenses against Ukrainian drone threats.

Russian state media recently reported a significant step in enhancing airport security through the deployment of advanced counter-drone systems. This shift highlights Moscow’s growing concern over Ukraine’s increasing proficiency and innovation in drone warfare.

In response to the escalating aerial threat, more than thirty Russian airports are set to be equipped with drone detection and countermeasure technologies.

Sergey Martynenko, department head of the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya), reportedly emphasized the importance of this initiative as part of a federal project aimed at bolstering infrastructure security and developing a specialized certification system for unmanned aerial systems.

The investment in counter-drone measures signifies a notable shift in Russia’s defensive posture. It reflects an acknowledgment of the continuous threats posed by Ukrainian innovations in unmanned technologies, including unmanned vessels in the Black Sea and various drone types at the frontline.
