In a remarkable demonstration of technology aiding law enforcement, Montgomery County successfully utilized a drone to apprehend two suspects involved in a theft at a Silver Spring grocery store.

The incident, which occurred in November 2023, highlights the effectiveness of the “Drone as ” program in combating crime.

The Incident and Drone Intervention

The event unfolded on November 30, 2023, around 6:15 p.m., when police were alerted to an assault at the 900 block of Thayer Avenue, reports ABC7News.

Responding to the scene was Raven 1, a , which played a crucial role in tracking the suspects.

The observed two individuals, later identified as Brandon Mark, 26, and Joseph Paul Lee, 40, fleeing the store with stolen merchandise.

Utilizing its aerial advantage, Raven 1 followed the suspects to Mayor Lane and Thayer Avenue, continuously updating the ground officers with their location and descriptions.

Apprehension and Charges

The rapid and coordinated response led to the swift apprehension of Mark and Lee. Initially providing false identities, their true names were later confirmed through law enforcement databases.

The stolen items were recovered and returned to the Safeway store from where they were taken.

Both suspects faced charges of theft and obstruction, with Lee released on bond while Mark remained in custody due to an outstanding warrant in D.C.

The success of Raven 1 in this operation is a testament to the growing importance of in modern policing.

During November and December, the drone responded to 159 calls in downtown Silver Spring, being the first on the scene in 121 instancesmin .

With an impressive average response time of just one minute and twenty seconds, Raven 1 was instrumental in locating 27 suspects.

This efficiency not only enhances the capabilities of law enforcement but also promises a safer community by ensuring rapid response and effective surveillance.
