International Drone Conference at Griffiss Paves the Way for Future Airspace Integration

Drones Take Center Stage at Griffiss International Airport

At the start of June, Rome, will become a hotspot for drone enthusiasts and industry leaders as they gather at Griffiss International Airport to set new standards for uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). This pivotal meeting, hosted by the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance Inc. (NUAIR), is slated for June 1-3 and aims to foster international collaboration in the rapidly evolving .

The Push for Advanced UAS Integration

As many as 100 leaders from around the globe will convene to focus on crafting industry standards that could revolutionize how drones operate within national airspace. The conference will tackle pivotal topics like operating drones beyond the visual line of sight—a development that could dramatically expand drones' commercial applications, from delivering packages to more innovative uses.

Ken Stewart, CEO of NUAIR, emphasized the organization's longstanding role in shaping drone operations: “NUAIR has had an active voice in ASTM International and many other UAS standards organizations for years, helping to develop the standards needed for safe, commercial drone operations. We are looking forward to hosting and taking part in the next ASTM International meeting at the New York UAS Test Site.”

Addressing Safety and Performance Standards

The discussions will be steered by ASTM International's F38 committee, which focuses on everything from drone design and performance to quality acceptance tests and safety monitoring. This broad assembly of stakeholders includes manufacturers, federal agencies, and professionals from various sectors—all dedicated to enhancing drone safety and functionality on a global scale.

A notable achievement of these collaborative efforts is the small UAS Parachute Recovery Systems Standard, established by NUAIR with ASTM International. Since its introduction in late 2018, this standard has enabled companies to enhance their safety protocols when applying for FAA waivers to fly over people, opening up new commercial prospects.

Local Support and Global Implications

Oneida County is proud to host this significant event, recognizing its potential to influence the future of .

Anthony J. Picente Jr., Oneida County Executive, expressed his enthusiasm about the meeting: “We welcome the industry leaders whose cutting-edge development is advancing the integration of unmanned aircraft into the national airspace. We are proud to conduct the research at our site that is aiding in their efforts to revolutionize the capabilities of drone delivery.”

Setting the Sky as the Limit

The upcoming ASTM International meeting at Griffiss is more than just a conference; it's a crucial step towards integrating drones into our everyday lives more seamlessly and safely. With international experts pooling their knowledge to set standards, the future of UAS looks both promising and exciting. As these new standards take shape, they pave the way for innovations that could one day make drone-delivered packages an ordinary part of our daily routines.
