Google’s Wing to Manufacture Drones in India
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is making a big move by starting drone manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, India, through its subsidiary Wing LLC. This marks Google’s entry into India’s rapidly growing drone market, which is expected to hit $13 billion by 2030.
Wing LLC Expands to India
Google’s subsidiary, Wing LLC, is known for its drone delivery services in the US, Europe, and Australia. With over 350,000 commercial deliveries completed, Wing is now reportedly eyeing India for its next big venture. They have recently introduced a larger drone designed to handle bigger orders more efficiently.
Tamil Nadu: The New Drone Hub
Tamil Nadu has successfully attracted Google’s attention as a prime location for this new venture. Led by the state’s industry minister, TRB Rajaa, a delegation from Tamil Nadu visited the US to discuss potential production facilities with Google executives. This strategic move aligns perfectly with India’s push for more domestic drone production.
Boost for Local Manufacturing
This isn’t just about drones. Google is also negotiating with Foxconn, known for manufacturing iPhones, to start producing Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu. This development further cements Tamil Nadu’s position as a major player in the tech manufacturing sector. The state already contributes nearly one-third of India’s electronics exports, making it an attractive choice for tech giants like Google.
