NYSEG and RG&E are ramping up their drone inspection program to evaluate thousands of miles of power transmission lines as winter approaches in New York state. The utility companies demonstrated their advanced aerial inspection capabilities on Thursday, showcasing how drones are revolutionizing infrastructure maintenance, reports Spectrum News.
Advanced Aerial Technology in Action
The inspection drones carry high-resolution cameras that capture detailed imagery of electrical infrastructure, enabling technicians to spot potential issues before they become major problems. This proactive approach helps prevent power outages during harsh winter conditions when reliability is most crucial.

“Using drones to gather aerial data is highly effective,” explains Paul Iannuzzelli, manager of networks standardization and maintenance for NYSEG and RG&E. “Drones can inspect electrical infrastructure that’s hard to access, such as high-voltage power lines or remote locations, without the need for scaffolding or other equipment.”
The drone inspection program, which began in 2021, represents a significant upgrade from traditional inspection methods. Teams can now identify physical damage, corrosion, and deterioration more quickly and safely than ever before.
