Massive Scale of Drone Attack Catches US Off Guard
Iran launched over 300 drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles at Israel on April 13, far exceeding US military expectations. US forces managed to intercept 70 drones and three ballistic missiles, largely thwarting the assault.
“Attack drones are a low-cost, low-risk option for the enemy. They can deploy them in massive numbers, and we must engage them to protect civilians and our allies,” explained Lt. Col. Timothy “Diesel” Causey, noting that crews “hadn’t started practising on a large scale yet.”
Dangerous Close-Range Drone Engagement
Major Benjamin “Irish” Coffey and Captain Lacie “Sonic” Hester found themselves in a particularly harrowing situation when they ran out of missiles. In total darkness, they attempted to down an Iranian drone using their aircraft’s gun, flying dangerously close to the ground.
“You feel the terrain rush, you feel yourself getting closer and closer to the ground. The risk was just too high to try again,” Coffey recounted.
Modern Warfare Challenges
The incident highlighted the complex reality of modern aerial warfare, where advanced fighter jets must counter relatively simple drone technology.
“You’re dealing with targets that push the limits of a fighter aircraft’s ability to detect and respond—what we call ‘find, fix, track, target, and engage,'” said Coffey.
For their extraordinary bravery, Hester and Coffey received the Silver Star, while other crew members received Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star honors.
DroneXL’s Take
This unprecedented drone attack highlights the evolving nature of aerial warfare and the growing importance of drone technology in modern military operations. The challenge of using traditional fighter aircraft against massive drone swarms raises important questions about future air defense strategies and the need for specialized counter-drone systems. This incident underscores why military forces worldwide are investing heavily in both drone and counter-drone capabilities.

Sounds like our Fighter Aircraft and other Forces need to be equipped with more Anti-Drone Weapons.
They airforce should install laser beams on there jets, that should easily destroy drones
RESURRECT THE LIKES OF THE P51 mustang fighter modified to use turbo prop engines and use gun to bring those propeller driven drones with composite fuselage which will be difficult to detect by radar why use a gun in in a knife fight
In addition to previous comment there is large disaprity using 4th5th6th generation fighter where and 2nd 3rd generation slow flying fighter can be used to deal with propeler driven drones surely the loiter time of those type of the likes of tje P51 mustang fighter will be longer and their speed will surely be on yhe same ball park using visual aquistiin to seek and destroy
