DJI working on new DJI Osmo Nano camera series
DJI is working on another new camera, Osmo Nano alongside the already leaked Osmo 360 action camera. The launch of the DJI Osmo Nano will be the start of a new camera series for DJI, named the DJI Nano Series.
What is DJI Osmo Nano?
We currently know three things when it comes to Osmo Nano. First, the name of the camera is Osmo Nano and it will be the start of the new DJI Nano Series of cameras. The code associated with the camera is ow001, also confirming the start of a new series.
For reference here are the current Osmo camera codes:
- ac = Osmo Action
- hg = Osmo Pocket & Osmo Mobile (it looks like Osmo Mobile will be changed to om in the future)
- oq = Osmo 360
- ow = Osmo Nano
As the name suggests it will likely be an even smaller form factor camera than the current Osmo cameras on the market, including Action, Pocket, and the Mobile gimbals. We aren’t sure exactly what form factor the Nano series will take on as there is not a lot of information out on the unreleased camera.
Osmo Action 2’s return?
Based on DJI’s past, there is a chance that the company will revive the Osmo Action 2’s square form factor. The Osmo Action 2 had a camera module that could be operated by itself or with a display module for an on-camera live view and a power module for additional battery life and microSD card slot.
Taking on GoPro & Insta360?
GoPro launched a smaller version of its action cameras alongside the HERO13 Black, named Hero, which DJI could be targeting with this new camera. DJI could be looking beyond GoPro and taking aim at Insta360 with its GO lineup of truly tiny cameras, of which the GO 3S comes in at just 39 grams.
DJI’s market dominance
Moving into another section of the action camera market is yet another step in DJI’s market dominance with in the product categories it’s built over the years.
DJI recently launched Neo, a very different drone for the company, targeted at the low end ‘toy’ side of the drone market. And is set to release another new drone, Flip next week. Both drones fit within their own section in the drone market, giving consumers even more options to choose from at different price points.
This could be the exact same strategy DJI is going for with the new Osmo Nano series. While the Osmo Action series might be perfect for some people, others might want an even smaller camera with decent specs.
Let’s wait and see what Osmo Nano turns out to be. Would you be interested in a smaller action camera from DJI? If so, would you rather a something like the Osmo Action 2 or more along the lines of the Insta360 GO series?
