Hasselblad, majority-owned by DJI, has unveiled the X2D II 100C, the successor to its flagship 100MP medium-format camera. The updated model introduces significant improvements in autofocus, in-body stabilization, and display performance, while lowering its launch price compared to the original X2D 100C.

Hybrid Autofocus with AI and LiDAR Assistance

One of the biggest limitations of Hasselblad’s first 100MP medium-format camera was the lack of continuous autofocus. The X2D II 100C addresses this by introducing AF-C phase-detect focus, supported by AI algorithms and LiDAR assistance. This marks the first time Hasselblad has offered a hybrid AF system, enabling “fast and accurate” subject tracking in low light and even burst shooting at up to 3 frames per second (fps). For photographers capturing moving subjects, this is a critical upgrade over the static-focus performance of its predecessor.

Industry-Leading Image Quality and HDR Support

The camera’s 100MP backside-illuminated sensor delivers 16-bit RAW images and up to 15.3 stops of dynamic range, putting it among the top performers in digital imaging. Notably, the X2D II 100C is the first medium-format camera to support true end-to-end HDR, reducing overexposure and improving highlight retention for natural-looking results. With HDR HEIF and Ultra HDR JPEG capabilities, photographers can view lifelike images directly on the camera’s display.

World’s Most Powerful In-Body Stabilization

Hasselblad engineered a new 5-axis stabilization system that promises up to 10 stops of shake reduction—surpassing rivals like Fujifilm’s GFX100 II (8 stops) and Canon’s top mirrorless offerings (8.5 stops). This performance allows handheld long exposures “lasting several seconds without a tripod,” according to the company, opening new creative possibilities for photographers seeking maximum sharpness from a high-resolution sensor.

Ergonomic Refinements and Brighter Display

Weighing 730 grams (1.6 pounds) without lens, the X2D II 100C is 7.5% lighter than its predecessor. Its redesigned grip with textured surfaces enhances comfort during extended shoots. The 3.6-inch tilting display provides 1,400 nits peak brightness, making it easier to frame shots in bright outdoor conditions. A new 5D joystick also improves focus point and menu navigation, addressing common user feedback.

Storage, Connectivity, and Mobile App Support

Like the original, the new body includes 1TB of integrated SSD storage alongside one CFexpress Type B card slot. While still lacking video capabilities, the X2D II 100C integrates with the new Phocus Mobile 2 app, enabling remote camera control, wireless image transfer, and basic editing workflows via mobile devices.

Pricing and New Accessories

Despite the upgrades, Hasselblad reduced its launch price. The X2D II 100C retails for $7,399, which is $800 less than its predecessor and undercuts the Fujifilm GFX100 II by $100. Alongside the camera, Hasselblad introduced the XCD 2.8–4 35-100E zoom lens (full-frame equivalent of 28–76mm) for $4,599, boasting fast stepping motors and a built-in leaf shutter with flash sync up to 1/4000s.

Additional accessories include the Vandra 20L backpack ($469) designed to carry the system, plus three new 86mm filters: UV ($299), ND ($329), and CPL ($559).

DroneXL’s Take

With DJI as Hasselblad’s majority shareholder, these improvements could influence future integrations of medium-format sensors into aerial imaging platforms, particularly for enterprise drones where resolution, detail, and stabilization are paramount. The addition of AI-assisted autofocus and class-leading IBIS could translate into sharper, more consistent results in airborne applications.

Still, without video capture, the X2D II 100C remains a tool for still photographers rather than aerial filmmakers. Will DJI leverage this technology for next-generation drone payloads, or will Hasselblad continue carving its niche solely in premium still photography?
