From DJI to Skydio: Sedgwick County PD Upgrade Their Drone Fleet

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office just made a big move, as KWCH reports. They’ve replaced their longtime DJI drones with the new Skydio X10s, marking a major shift in how U.S. law enforcement is using drones.

This isn’t just a simple upgrade. It’s part of a much larger trend. Across the country, police departments are moving to Skydio’s advanced drone systems to boost safety, speed up responses, and address growing concerns about data security tied to DJI models.

Why Skydio X10?

The Skydio X10 isn’t your average drone. It’s built for real-world missions where seconds matter. Its AI-driven navigation and obstacle avoidance make it perfect for flying in tight, unpredictable spaces like alleys or crowded neighborhoods.

The drone’s smart sensors and computer vision allow it to map environments and avoid collisions, even when communication links are weak. Plus, the X10 can share encrypted video and telemetry data in real time, giving command centers a clear view of what’s happening on the ground.

For many police agencies, this level of autonomy and data control is a game changer. DJI drones, though powerful, have faced mounting pressure over cybersecurity concerns and integration issues with U.S. emergency systems. Skydio’s made-in-America platform helps solve those problems.

Growing Adoption Across U.S. Departments

The partnership between Skydio and AXON has been key. AXON’s evidence management and real-time communication tools now sync directly with Skydio drones, letting officers stream live aerial footage during incidents.

More than 1,500 departments across the country have already joined the program. The combination of Skydio’s tech and AXON’s software means faster situational awareness and safer decision-making during emergencies.

Departments running Skydio’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs can now launch a drone within seconds of a 911 call. The aircraft arrives before officers, sending back critical visuals that help de-escalate situations and guide responders. Best of all, the X10’s autonomy reduces training time and human error.

How Sedgwick County Benefits

Sedgwick County’s Drone Unit, which started in 2018, has been known for staying ahead of the curve. They started with a DJI Matrice 210 and now with the new Skydio X10s, they’re taking another big step forward.

The upgraded sensors and AI flight systems allow the drones to operate safely in populated areas and during complex incidents. This means fewer crashes and lower liability.

Commanders can now monitor live feeds from anywhere, improving coordination during search and rescue missions, traffic incidents, or criminal investigations. When everyone on the team sees the same real-time data, decisions get faster and more accurate.

The Future of Police Drone Operations

Law enforcement is entering a new era. The move to Skydio X10 drones reflects a shift toward smarter, more secure, and more connected drone operations. Departments no longer have to choose between safety and speed. They can have both.

As Skydio continues to strengthen its partnerships with companies like AXON, we’ll likely see even deeper integration between drones, AI, and real-time policing tools. For agencies like Sedgwick County, this means better protection for both officers and citizens.

DroneXL’s Take

The Skydio X10 isn’t just another police drone. It’s a signal that the U.S. drone landscape is changing fast. DJI once dominated public safety, but the tide is turning. Skydio’s focus on autonomy, security, and American manufacturing hits all the right notes for law enforcement.

If this trend keeps up, Skydio could become the new standard for police drones across the country. And I’m not entirely on board with that.

  1. Our country is based on a free and capitalist marketplace. May the best product win. “Buy American” is great, but it should be by choice, not regulation. Skydio is suspected of being one of the major lobbyists against DJI and “Chinese drones”. Why not compete on price or product? Oh, maybe because they can’t. So instead, the spend millions of dollars lobbying against the biggest competitor in the market. Sad day for America and for UAS users.

  2. I see no reason to reward Skydio’s corruption with a public entity sale. They and their politician cronies have screwed us all.

  3. It’s not an upgrade if you’re moving away from DJI. Trump is a dipshit for many reasons, but this is one example of him allowing other countries to surpass us.

  4. Miss leading skydio cant compete with Dji Dji is being forced out of the country by greedy politicians with a move that reeks of corruption! So we are forced to use inferior equipment that cost 3 times as much!

  5. Well all know Skydio paid to play. Effectively reducing law enforcement advantage because they simply couldn’t create a competitive product. Gotta love politics.
