DJI Drone Finds Missing Dog After Ohio Night Accident

On a snowy January night in Defiance, Ohio, a family’s worst fear began with the sound of a car strike and ended in silence, their dog Banks vanished into the cold after being hit, leaving Jessica Adams and her family searching for hours as temperatures dropped and hope thinned, as WTOL reported.

By the next day, nearly 24 hours later, exhaustion and fear had taken over, and the idea that Banks might not survive the night felt unbearable.

That is when Adams learned about Lost and Found Drone Service, a small northwest Ohio operation run by Rick Greulich, who specializes in using thermal drones to locate missing pets.

Greulich flies a DJI Matrice 30T, a commercial grade drone equipped with a high resolution thermal camera that is particularly well suited for this kind of search work, allowing operators to detect body heat in tall grass, woods, and low visibility conditions.

Greulich told the family he could arrive in about 90 minutes, and despite the uncertainty, they decided to try one last option.

How a Matrice 30T spotted what eyes could not

Once on site, Greulich flew a methodical grid pattern using the Matrice 30T’s thermal view to scan tall grass and wooded areas, watching the live feed fill with heat signatures.

Squirrels, rabbits, deer, and birds repeatedly appeared on screen, a reminder of how challenging ground searches can be even with advanced tools.

About two hours into the search, something different appeared, a familiar shape that Adams instantly recognized as Banks. He was lying in tall grass in someone’s front yard, roughly half a mile from home, nearly invisible to the naked eye but clearly outlined through the drone’s thermal camera.

When Adams reached him, Banks wagged his tail despite his injuries, a small but powerful sign that he was alive. His back legs were badly hurt and there was blood, but he had survived the freezing night.

The family carefully carried him to the car and rushed him to an emergency veterinarian, where he received stitches to his back legs, with vets confident he would heal without surgery.

Greulich, a dog owner himself, says moments like these are why he does the work. Returning missing pets to their families is emotional every time, especially when conditions suggest the odds are stacked against survival.

Recovery, gratitude, and the growing role of thermal drones

Today, Banks is back home recovering, surrounded by belly rubs, treats, and the people who refused to stop looking. Adams believes that without the rapid response and the thermal capabilities of the drone, Banks likely would not have survived his injuries in the cold.

This rescue highlights a practical and often overlooked use case for drones like the DJI Matrice 30T. Its weather resistance, flight stability, and integrated thermal sensor make it an ideal platform for search and rescue scenarios, especially when time, terrain, and visibility work against traditional methods.
