China has shown a launch system that turns a line of flatbed trucks into an electromagnetic catapult for fixed-wing drones, with no runway required. Beijing Institute of Technology posted video on June 30 of three eight-wheeled trucks linked end to end into a single launch rail, accelerating a fixed-wing UAV off the back and into the air.

The post was later deleted. The South China Morning Post reported the demonstration on July 2, and a Chinese aviation expert summed up the idea in one line, that a few trucks linked together can launch fixed-wing drones almost anywhere.

The trucks connect into one electromagnetic launch rail

Three eight-wheeled flatbed trucks pull into a line and lock together through mechanical connectors, forming a continuous electromagnetic rail that throws a fixed-wing drone into the air within seconds.

The system uses electromagnetic aircraft launch technology, the same family as EMALS, which drives the aircraft forward with electric force instead of steam or a rocket booster.

Electromagnetic catapults are what navies fit to their newest aircraft carriers, the American Gerald R. Ford class and China’s own Fujian among them. Shrinking that hardware onto a convoy of trucks is the part that turns heads.

Fu Qianshao, a Chinese aviation expert, put the appeal plainly. “By simply linking trucks, a mobile electronic launch system can be built, enabling fixed-wing UAV launches virtually anywhere,” he said. The catapult first surfaced publicly late in 2025 and has since been tested in several configurations, which suggests a program moving forward rather than a one-off stunt.

Runway independence is the whole point. Fixed-wing drones normally need a strip of prepared ground or a dedicated catapult to get airborne, and airfields are the first thing an enemy tries to crater. A launcher that rides on trucks can set up on a road or an open field and move again before anyone finds it.

The catapult is one piece of a container-weapon family

BIT calls the launcher part of a “container-type weapon module set,” a plan to pack whole categories of military hardware into standardized shipping containers that ride on trucks or ships. Beyond the drone catapult, the described modules cover air defense and anti-ship missiles, radar, electronic warfare, command-and-control, and logistics support.

The standard container is the quiet trick here. Because every module fits the same dimensions that move global trade, the trucks and ships that already handle containers can move these weapons without special equipment. Military kit hides inside civilian logistics.

As The Chosun Daily reported, the numbers behind it are large. More than 70 Chinese research institutions worked on the project, and the university has floated an annual production target of up to 2,000 sets.

BIT also wants to export the modules, not only to the Chinese military but to Belt and Road partners and Global South nations, which would push the concept well past China’s own borders.

Analysts see a Taiwan Strait angle, with limits

Some analysts read the container system as a way to arm China’s civilian fleet in a hurry. In a Taiwan Strait crisis, standardized weapon containers could turn ordinary cargo ships into part-time military platforms, launching drones or firing missiles from decks that carried freight a week earlier. China’s commercial shipping fleet is one of the largest on the planet, which is what makes that scenario more than a thought experiment.

The same experts draw a hard line, though. A container weapon set adds firepower, but it does not turn a freighter into a warship. Destroyers carry large radars, submarine-detection suites, and damage-control systems that a bolt-on container cannot replace, and none of that comes with a launch module. The system extends reach. It does not rewrite the balance at sea.

That distinction matters for how seriously to take the video. This is confirmed as a demonstrated launcher and a stated production plan. Whether it becomes a fielded, war-ready system at 2,000 units a year is a claim from the developer, not a fact on the ground yet.

The eye-catching part is a drone rolling off the back of a truck, but the real move is the shipping container. China is trying to make military capability as cheap to build and mass-produce as any other palletized cargo, and that is a harder thing to counter than any single weapon. A shipping container and a flatbed truck cost a rounding error next to a warship or a fixed airbase, and that gap is the entire point of the exercise.

Runway independence is what I keep coming back to. A lot of counter-air planning assumes the other side needs airstrips you can find and hit. A catapult that assembles from trucks on a random stretch of road takes that assumption away, and it does it with commercial vehicles that look like everything else on a highway.

The deleted post is the tell worth watching. You do not pull a video that shows nothing, and you do not post one that shows everything on purpose either. What China has proven is the launch. What it has only asserted is the scale, the 2,000 sets a year and the export pipeline. Whether those numbers are real is the open question, and it is the one I would put ahead of the hardware itself.
