Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says drones and advanced thermal imaging are now part of one of Canada’s largest firefighting mobilizations, with more than 5,300 personnel and nearly 300 aircraft deployed against one of the most intense wildfire seasons in the country’s history. The fires are hitting northwestern Ontario hardest, where more than 10 communities have been evacuated and smoke has pushed air quality alerts across a dozen or more U.S. states.

President Donald Trump responded on Friday by threatening to add the cost of that smoke to the tariffs Canada already pays. The political fight will get the headlines. Carney Names Drones In Canada’s National Fire Response

Carney announced on X that Canada has deployed more than 5,300 firefighting personnel and nearly 300 aircraft, from waterbombers and helicopters to evacuation planes, and is using “drones, new technology, and advanced thermal imaging” for real-time fire detection and mitigation as extreme heat and drought drive the fires.

The numbers on the ground explain the urgency. More than 130 wildfires were burning in northwestern Ontario by mid-week, forcing evacuation orders for Armstrong, Collins First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, and other communities, according to The Globe and Mail. Several smaller fires merged inside Wabakimi Provincial Park into Ontario’s largest blaze of the year. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Friday that 10 communities had been evacuated, per Al Jazeera. On July 15, Toronto briefly ranked as the second most polluted major city in the world, according to IQAir.

Thermal drones earn their place in exactly this terrain. Much of northwestern Ontario sits on muskeg, boreal peatland that can smolder below the surface with little visible flame and flare up days or weeks later. A thermal camera reads that hidden heat when human eyes and optical cameras see nothing. DroneXL documented the same capability at Montana’s Banana Lake Fire, where a single thermal drone flew through smoke too thick for crewed aircraft, mapped the hotspots of an 850-acre blaze, and helped crews contain it in a day. Alaska’s fire service used the same infrared playbook to hold the Sawmill Creek Fire to 14.8 acres in May, and Greece is scaling the concept into a national grid of more than 100 drone surveillance bases for its 2026 season.

The Smoke Crosses The Border In Both Directions

Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States is being “unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air,” accused Canada of willful negligence in forest management, and said the cost must be added to existing tariffs, according to CBC News. He said he would call Carney to discuss it. Canada’s Minister of Emergency Management, Eleanor Olszewski, answered that Canada has invested $12 billion in forest sustainability and fire prevention since 2020.

The fire map complicates the tariff framing. At least a dozen wildfires are burning in northern Minnesota near the border, and some of that smoke, and some of those fires, moved north into Ontario. CBS News reported that the smoke blanketing Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. this week came from fires in both Canada and Minnesota. The cooperation runs both ways too. The Canadian air force rescued two groups of youth campers who had crossed the border during the Minnesota fires, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said, per NBC News, while Ford thanked Minnesota and Massachusetts for sending support north.

The useful version of this fight would be a joint U.S.-Canada drone detection layer over the border forests, because the muskeg that makes these fires nearly impossible to extinguish is precisely the problem thermal sensors were built to solve.

And a word to every pilot watching orange skies this weekend: leave the drone in the bag near any active fire. The U.S. Forest Service logged 218 unauthorized drone incursions over wildfires last year, the most ever recorded, and it took just one DJI Mini to punch a hole in a Super Scooper over the Palisades Fire and ground it for days. Carney just handed the drone industry its highest-profile endorsement yet. Whether Ottawa converts that sentence into an actual procurement program, the way Greece went from 45 drones to 82 to a 100-base national grid in two seasons, is the thing to watch when Canada writes its post-season review. Don’t be the operator who gives regulators a reason to write the other kind of drone story instead.
