The American drone that never got its shot at Everest just proved itself on the mountain next door. In June, Nepali operator Airlift Technology flew a U.S.-made Freefly Alta X Gen 2 on Ama Dablam, hauling oxygen cylinders and equipment from Base Camp at 15,092 feet (4,600 m) to Yak Camp at 16,568 feet (5,050 m), across 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) of steep terrain. Every flight landed clean despite strong winds.
The demonstration ran in partnership with Seven Summit Treks and The Coca-Cola Foundation, with the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu applauding from the front row. “This collaboration carries forward the spirit of exploration and enterprise,” said Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom.
Read that sentence again. Embassies do not usually issue quotes about cargo drones. This one did, because this story stopped being about drones months ago.
Nepal Blocked Both, Then Let Only One Come Back
The part that gives this flight its edge happened in April. Nepal’s Home Ministry refused authorization for the Alta X Gen 2 test on Everest, citing concerns under the country’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operations Regulations and the need for “wider stakeholder consultation.” A test at Everest Base Camp was halted abruptly after officials determined the team lacked the required permissions.
The same ministry simultaneously cancelled the permit of the Chinese DJI FlyCart 100 operating in the Everest region. On paper, both superpowers’ drones got grounded together.
Here is the asymmetry: DJI’s permission came back after a five-day suspension. The American drone’s never did. The FlyCart 100 went on to move 22,207 pounds (10,073 kg) of cargo between Base Camp and Camp 1 this season, work DroneXL covered in July, while the Alta X had to settle for a different mountain.
Nobody in Kathmandu has explained the difference in treatment, and no source has produced evidence of lobbying by anyone. What the record shows is two drones suspended, one restored in five days, and one redirected to Ama Dablam. Kathmandu-based outlets are already framing the season as a US-China tech battle playing out at altitude.
DJI Set the Bar, and the Timing Is Not Subtle
The context makes the permit story sharper. DJI owns the Everest highlight reel: the FlyCart 30 flew the world’s first drone delivery trials there, and this month the company debuted the EV50, its first eVTOL delivery drone, with a flight to 29,072 feet on Everest’s north side carrying ozone-measuring equipment for university researchers.
Every one of those milestones is real engineering. It is also marketing of the highest order, and it works: Everest is the most valuable proving ground in the drone industry, because a machine that performs at 20,000 feet in katabatic winds sells itself everywhere below.
Freefly wanted the same stage for the Alta X Gen 2, an NDAA-compliant, Blue-listed heavy lifter built in Washington State. What it got instead was Ama Dablam, a technically serious 22,349-foot (6,812 m) peak that mountaineers call one of the most beautiful in the world. As consolation prizes go, it photographs well. As market access goes, it is not Everest, and everyone involved knows it.
The winner in all this is the mountain itself. The FlyCart fleet hauled thousands of pounds of waste off Everest this season on return legs, and the Alta X flights point the same direction: future applications named for the American platform include mountain cleanup, search and rescue, and emergency deliveries. Two industrial giants competing over who cleans a mountain better is the rare arms race with no downside. The oceans could use exactly this kind of fight: companies elbowing each other for the right to haul out the most trash and restore what lives there. If corporate ego is the fuel, let it burn in that direction.
The Regulatory Gate Is Now Part of the Race
The Ama Dablam flights prove the machine was never the problem. The Alta X handled altitude, wind, and steep terrain with a Nepali crew at the sticks, the same crew that has been flying DJI hardware on Everest for two seasons.
What separates the two programs today is not thrust or endurance. It is paperwork, and whoever controls the paperwork controls the proving ground. Nepal has every sovereign right to regulate its airspace, and its caution after a chaotic season is defensible. But when the outcomes consistently favor one flag, the regulation itself becomes a competitive variable, and manufacturers will start pricing it in.
DroneXL’s Take
This TOTALLY looks like payback. The United States spent three years building walls against DJI: the Covered List, the customs holds, the Section 1709 audit clock. Now an American drone shows up in the Himalaya, on DJI’s signature stage, and the permits evaporate while the Chinese fleet gets its papers back in five days. I cannot prove a connection, no one has shown me documents, and I will say so plainly. But if you wanted to design a mirror image of what Washington does to DJI, it would look exactly like April in Kathmandu.
I fly drones at 9,350 feet in Quito, where altitude math is part of every flight plan, so I want to be fair to the machines: both of these aircraft are magnificent. That is what makes the politics so frustrating. The engineers on both sides keep building better answers, and the governments keep changing the question.
My hope is the selfish one every pilot shares: that this rivalry keeps producing better equipment, cleaner mountains, and eventually cleaner oceans, whoever’s flag is on the airframe. The Alta X proved itself on Ama Dablam. The EV50 proved itself at 29,000 feet. The only thing still failing the altitude test is the paperwork.
