Sikorsky has completed the initial ground and flight test phase of its Nomad 100 drone for DARPA’s Early VTOL Aircraft Demonstration program, the Lockheed Martin subsidiary announced on July 22. The Nomad 100 is a Group 3 uncrewed aircraft with an 18-foot (5.5-meter) wingspan that takes off sitting on its tail, hovers like a helicopter, then tips over and cruises on its wing like an airplane. The aircraft now moves to a government facility for a more demanding flight test campaign built around multirole missions.

For a company that has spent 103 years building helicopters people trust their lives to, this is the machine that signals where Sikorsky thinks the next few decades are going.

The Rotor Blown Wing Skips The Compromise Other VTOLs Make

The Nomad 100 is built on Sikorsky’s rotor blown wing architecture, a tail-sitting design where two prop-rotors mounted on the wing do double duty. On the ground and in hover, they work as helicopter rotors. In cruise, the whole aircraft rotates forward and they become propellers, with the rotor wash flowing over the wing to keep it effective at low speeds.

The payoff is a machine that needs no runway, no launcher, and no recovery net, and still flies with the speed and endurance of a fixed-wing aircraft. Sikorsky says the design handles operations across land and sea, from austere forward operating bases to ship decks.

Rich Benton, Sikorsky’s vice president and general manager, framed the aircraft as a teammate rather than a standalone system. “Nomad will serve as part of a crewed-uncrewed team complementing missions anywhere from austere forward operating bases to ship decks and unimproved landing zones,” he said.

The company has not published speed, endurance, or payload figures for the Nomad 100. The War Zone reported the EVADE test articles weigh around 330 pounds (150 kilograms), and the hybrid-electric powerplant pairs a diesel engine with electric propulsion, a setup that extends endurance well past what batteries alone deliver.

DARPA Put Sikorsky’s Autonomy On All Five EVADE Aircraft

The detail in this announcement that matters more than the airframe is the software. DARPA selected Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy system to fly all five platforms in the EVADE program, not just Sikorsky’s own entry.

That means competing airframes in the same DARPA program will run on Sikorsky’s brain. MATRIX has logged more than 1,000 flight hours across 500-plus tests and demonstrations, with over 100 trained operators in military and firefighting roles and integrations on more than 20 platforms, including the S-70UAS U-Hawk, the fully autonomous Black Hawk variant.

Whoever wins the EVADE airframe competition, Sikorsky’s autonomy stack already won. That is a stronger position than any single aircraft, because software that becomes the government’s default layer gets designed into requirements that outlive individual programs.

The Nomad Family Scales From 50 Pounds To Black Hawk Territory

The Nomad 100 is the second rung on a ladder Sikorsky laid out publicly last fall. DroneXL covered the Nomad family unveiling in October, when the company presented a scalable line running from small reconnaissance aircraft to machines the size of a Black Hawk.

The Nomad 50, with a 10.3-foot (3.1-meter) wingspan and purely electric propulsion, flew first and completed extended flight testing through 2025. The Nomad 100 stretches the design to 18 feet and adds the hybrid-electric powerplant. Beyond it sits a planned Group 4 variant with roughly 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of payload capacity, an aircraft Sikorsky compares to the MQ-1C Gray Eagle in scale. That larger machine has passed its preliminary design review, and a demonstrator is planned.

The mission list Sikorsky attaches to the family covers reconnaissance, light attack, contested logistics, aerial firefighting, and naval operations. The rotor blown wing concept itself is not new to DroneXL readers either. We first covered Sikorsky’s flying wing experiments in July 2023, back when the design was a battery-powered proof of concept.

Hybrid VTOL Is Where The Defense Drone Money Is Converging

Sikorsky is not scaling this family in a vacuum. The hybrid-electric VTOL formula, vertical takeoff plus long fixed-wing endurance plus no runway, has become the shape defense buyers ask for. Anduril and UAE’s EDGE Group put $200 million into a joint venture to mass-produce the Omen hybrid VTOL last November, aimed at the same operational problem: useful endurance from places without infrastructure.

The difference in approach is telling. The newer defense companies pitch speed to production. Sikorsky is pitching a century of rotorcraft engineering and an autonomy system the government already flies. Both bets can pay, but they are different bets.

And what completed testing here is a wing that thinks it is a rotor, flown by software the government trusts more than it trusts any single airframe.

The airframe story is real but familiar. Tail-sitters and hybrid VTOLs are converging on the same mission set from a dozen companies, and Sikorsky’s entry has to prove itself at a government facility like everyone else’s. What is not familiar is a legacy helicopter maker positioning its autonomy layer as the common operating system for a DARPA program that includes its competitors. That is the part of this announcement that will still matter in ten years.

Sikorsky’s institutional habit is longevity. This is the company whose airframes serve for decades, in an industry where the B-52 has flown since 1955 because replacing something that works is harder than maintaining it. If the Nomad family follows that pattern, the aircraft that just finished initial testing is not a product cycle. It is the front end of a platform the Pentagon could still be flying in 2050.

The open question is performance. Sikorsky has published no speed, endurance, or payload numbers for the Nomad 100, and until the government facility campaign produces data, the rotor blown wing’s efficiency claims rest on the company’s word. Watch what comes out of that test campaign, because DARPA programs produce numbers, and numbers settle arguments that press releases start.
