Germany opened a national research center for drone security on Tuesday, exactly two weeks after a bomb-carrying drone struck the wing of a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Research Minister Dorothee Bär and Saxony-Anhalt premier Sven Schulze inaugurated the Drone Security Technology Center at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt airfield, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Magdeburg and roughly 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the apron where that drone lay undetected for four hours.
The center will develop and test systems for detecting and defeating hostile drones at a working airport, with a second site at the DLR campus in Braunschweig. Dobrindt called the threat part of the “shadow war of the 21st century” and announced that Germany’s federal police counter-drone force will double.
DroneXL flagged this opening on August 10, when Dobrindt told Bild am Sonntag that the drone technology arms race demanded research units of Germany’s own. Tuesday delivered the building.
DLR Puts Counter-Drone Research on a Working Airfield
The Drone Security Technology Center operates at two DLR sites, Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport and Braunschweig, where researchers will develop and field-test systems for detecting and defeating hostile drones under real airport conditions. DLR will invest more than 10 million euros in the buildout and add up to 40 new positions.
Cochstedt started as a Soviet military airfield and later limped along as a regional airport before DLR bought it in 2019. The agency’s National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems went operational there in 2021, and the airport resumed flight operations a year later. Utilization has climbed about 20 percent annually since, passing 200 usage days in 2025 with roughly half of those booked by outside companies and research partners, according to DLR’s announcement.

The new center bolts a security mission onto that infrastructure. Manufacturers from startups to established players can bring detection and interception systems to the field for testing, and the center’s work feeds into the Joint Drone Defense Center, where Germany’s security agencies pool their drone picture. DLR chair Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla framed the mission as transfer speed: “Research must have an impact, especially where the security of our country is concerned” (translated from the German announcement).
Dobrindt said the facility is unique nationwide and sits deliberately at airport infrastructure, the exact setting where the threat has landed.
The Leipzig Drone Bomb Set the Timeline
On August 4, a quadcopter carrying Semtex and PETN crossed the Leipzig/Halle Airport fence and struck the wing of a parked Ukrainian An-124. The charge tore loose and lay on the apron for about four hours before a bus driver spotted it. Only a failed detonator kept the outcome forensic.
DroneXL has tracked the case since the first report on August 6. Investigators confirmed the charge held military-class explosive and assessed the drone was built to slip past the airport’s installed defense system. By August 10, DNA on the drone had matched a trace from the 2024 arson attack on the airport’s DHL hub, with the same profile on file in Lithuania, and federal police had stood up an EchoShield radar, built by Echodyne of Kirkland, Washington, on the airport’s old control tower.
The wider pressure is documented. Dpa counts 166 unauthorized drones over Germany’s 15 international airports in the first half of 2026, and suspected reconnaissance drones shut Munich Airport twice in one week last October.
Germany’s federal prosecutor general has taken over the Leipzig case. U.S. intelligence assessments reported by the Wall Street Journal link the drone to the Russian government, while German authorities have made no attribution and Moscow denies involvement. That gap is the unresolved center of Tuesday’s ceremony: Berlin opened a test range for defenses against an attacker it will not yet name.
Berlin Doubles Its Drone Police While the Research Arm Spins Up
The Cochstedt center is the research layer of a defense buildout that already includes hardware, manpower and law. Germany’s federal police counter-drone force is doubling from 150 to 300 officers and from four to eight bases, and police have held shoot-down authority since October 2025.
The doubling, which Dobrindt confirmed at the opening, matches what he told Bild am Sonntag on August 10. Lawmakers gave federal police explicit authority to disable or shoot down threatening drones ten months ago, and a national drone defense center in Erding has been running since May. What Germany lacked was a place to find out which systems actually work before buying them. Leipzig made that gap concrete: the airport had a defense system installed, and the attacker engineered around it.
Bär pointed to IDAS-PRO, a research project aimed at spotting and capturing rogue drones around airports and large events, and promised on Instagram that unwanted drones over stadiums or concerts would get a “not with us.” The defense ministry sounded different. Spokesperson Mitko Müller warned after the Leipzig discovery that “you cannot provide detection and defence capabilities around the clock” along tens of thousands of kilometers of fencing, and that the notion of one hundred percent security is deceptive. DroneXL’s Take
When I closed our August 10 report, I wrote that Cochstedt’s opening would show whether Berlin’s answer to Leipzig is capability or another coordination body. Eight days later I can answer it: this one is capability. A live airfield, controlled airspace, an incubation track for manufacturers, and a direct line into the police units that will fly whatever passes the tests. Testing a jammer in a lab tells you it works in a lab. Cochstedt can tell you whether it works between cargo flights.
The concession is owed here: none of this touches a legitimate pilot, and none of it should. The Leipzig device carried military explosives into a NATO cargo hub. Counter-drone research aimed at that threat is the legitimate safety work DroneXL has always backed, and it is the opposite of grounding hobbyists after every scare. An attacker willing to strap Semtex to a quadcopter ignores a geofence either way.
My worry is scale. More than 10 million euros and up to 40 positions is seed money against what Dobrindt himself calls an arms race, and the escalation since last autumn only bends one way. Copenhagen and Oslo closed in September 2025, and Munich followed twice in October. Ten months later the mystery sightings had graduated to a charge on an Antonov’s wing.
Two things to watch. The Vilnius parcel trial is in session, and if the Leipzig DNA match survives scrutiny it drags the drone case into that courtroom. And DLR says the Cochstedt buildout runs across the next several years, so the race that matters is whether tested hardware reaches those 300 officers before the next drone crosses a fence. Müller’s arithmetic about tens of thousands of kilometers of fencing says Berlin already knows it cannot win that race everywhere. Cochstedt exists to make sure it wins where it counts.
