‘s drone delivery service is expanding in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, aiming to make drone-based delivery a norm for thousands of households. By partnering with Wing and , the retail giant is setting the stage for a new era of convenience.

Expanding Reach in Dallas-Fort Worth

Walmart has announced that its drone delivery service now covers up to 75% of the Dallas-Fort Worth population. This expansion is part of Walmart’s broader strategy to dominate the drone delivery market in the U.S. The service, initially launched in Northwest in late 2021, is now available at more locations in Dallas, thanks to partnerships with Wing, a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet, and Zipline.

How It Works

To use the service, customers download the Wing app, enter their address to check availability, and place an order. Delivery times are impressively short, with some orders arriving in as little as 10 minutes.

Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Innovation & Automation, Prathibha Rajashekhar, stated, “This expansion will bring the ultimate convenience of drone delivery to communities across the DFW area.”

Reaching New Heights

The expansion began with a Walmart Supercenter in Frisco, , launching the delivery service via Wing drones on April 29. This initiative includes stores in North Richland Hills, Frisco, and Lewisville. The FAA approval for (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations allows these drones to deliver to more homes without the need for an observer.

Meeting Customer Needs

Since its inception, Walmart’s drone delivery service has completed over 20,000 deliveries. Customers have used it for various reasons, from forgotten ingredients to over-the-counter medicines. Popular items include snacks, beverages, and fragile items like eggs.

Wing CEO Adam Woodworth noted, “Our first few months delivering to Walmart customers have made it clear: Demand for drone delivery is real.”

A Brief History of Walmart’s Drone Endeavors

Walmart’s drone delivery journey began with a partnership with in 2021, followed by services in , , and Texas. The retailer’s collaboration with Zipline started at a Neighborhood Market store in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and has since grown to include multiple partners.

The Future of Drone Delivery

Walmart’s extensive network of nearly 4,700 stores positions it well to scale its drone delivery services. With most of the U.S. population living within 10 miles of a Walmart store, the potential for widespread adoption is significant. Walmart’s investment in DroneUp and partnerships with Flytrex, Zipline, and Wing underline its commitment to innovation and customer convenience.

Walmart’s drone delivery service is transforming the retail landscape in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, offering fast and convenient delivery options. As the company continues to expand and innovate, millions of Texans could soon experience the benefits of drone delivery firsthand. With its strategic partnerships and extensive store network, Walmart is poised to make drone delivery a reality for many more customers across the U.S.
