The DJI Mavic 3 might not have an optical zoom lens suggested DJI insider DealsDrone on Twitter this morning.

Update: DJI Mavic 3 is expected to be released on October 20, 2021.

DJI Mavic 3 might not have optical zoom lens, DJI insider says.

This morning on social media, DealsDrone said that:

Unfortunately, Mavic 3 may only be two fixed-focus lenses, not continuous optical zoom.

The Mavic 3 would have digital zoom by combining the video from the two camera lenses, each with a different focal length. This design would be simpler, lighter, and more cost-effective, keeping the DJI Mavic 3’s price and retail price low.

However, if the DJI Mavic 3 would have optical zoom capabilities, possibly combined with digital zoom, you would likely have a wider zoom range and better image quality throughout the zoom range.

The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom was equipped with a 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel sensor that provided up to four-times zoom, including a two-times optical zoom (24-48mm).

Looking closely at the DJI Mavic 3 photo, it is hard to say whether the camera does have optical zoom capabilities built-in.

Dji Mavic 3 Might Not Have Optical Zoom Lens, Dji Insider Says.

DealsDrone has been a very reliable source of DJI information in the past, the fact that he tweeted that the DJI Mavic 3 might come with two fixed-focus lenses and no optical zoom could very well be accurate. If that is indeed the case, it might make the drone less interesting to professional users.

Will the DJI Mavic 3 have a mechanical shutter?

Another question that remains unanswered and might make the DJI Mavic 3 less appealing for professional use, is whether it will have a global shutter, or a mechanical shutter such as the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, to help eliminate the rolling shutter effect. This is especially important for pilots who use their DJI drones for photogrammetry. See here for more on this topic.

  1. A “global” shutter and a “mechanical shutter” are 2 very different things. Secondly, if you paid attention to the spec sheets, you will see the the m4/3 camera has a mechanical shutter.

    • Yes. I am aware that they are two very different things. And yes saw that in the spec sheet as well. Will be the next post.

    • The Mavic 3 does not have a m4/3 camera. Look at a 24mm lens on a m4/3 camera like the X5 and explain how this could possibly be m4/3. That tiny lens would not cover m4/3. There is massive difference between a 1” sensor, 1 2.3” sensor, and a m4/3 sensor. MASSIVE!

  2. 7x claim should have made it clear that it’s not real zoom.
Such actual zoom lens would start requiring some size even for smaller sensor.
While that main camera with Four Thirds sensor takes really sizable space from camera of this size drone.
For 1″ sensor they should have been able to give nice real optical zoom lens.
